Outbound Travel Departures from the United States by U.S. Citizens Totaled 9,009,439 in March 2024, an Increase of 15.4% Compared to March 2023
Data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) show that in March 2024:
International Arrivals to the United States
- Total non-U.S. resident international visitor volume to the United States of 5,893,360 increased +12.6% compared to March 2023 and represented 94.2% of the pre-COVID total visitor volume reported for March 2019.
- Overseas visitor volume to the United States of 2,706,146 increased +25.4% from March 2023.
- March 2024 was the thirty-sixth consecutive month that total non-U.S. resident international arrivals to the United States increased on a year-over-year (YOY) basis.
- March 2024 was the thirteenth consecutive month that overseas visitors totaled over 2 million.
- Of the top 20 tourist generating countries to the United States, Canada (with 2,030,842), was the only country that reported a decrease in visitor volume in March 2024 compared to March 2023, with a -3.0% change.
- The largest number of international visitor arrivals was from Canada (2,030,842), Mexico (1,156,372), the United Kingdom (330,937), Germany (193,337), and Japan (159,079). Combined, these top 5 source markets accounted for 65.7% of total international arrivals.
International Departures from the United States
- Total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States of 9,009,439 increased 15.4% compared to March 2023 and were 107.6% of total departures in pre-pandemic March 2019.
- March 2024 was the thirty-sixth consecutive month that total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States increased on a YOY basis.
- The market share for North America (Mexico & Canada) was 49.1% and overseas was 50.9%.
- Mexico recorded the largest outbound visitor volume of 3,620,485 (40.2% of total departures for March and 42.7% (YTD)). Canada recorded a YOY increase of 19.8%.
- Combined YTD, Mexico (9,832,941) and the Caribbean (3,024,258) accounted for 55.9% of total U.S. citizen international visitor departures.
- The Europe was the second largest market for outbound U.S. visitors with 1,500,310 departures. This accounted for 16.7% of all departures in March. Outbound visitation to the Caribbean in March 2024 increased 15.0% compared to March 2023.

ADIS/I-92 Visitor Departures
The ADIS/I-94 Visitor Arrivals Program, in cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), provides a count of visitor arrivals (Overseas+Canada+Mexico) to the United States (with stays of 1-night or more and visiting under certain visa types) and is used to calculate U.S. travel and tourism exports. The APIS/I-92 Program provides information on non-stop international air traffic between the United States and other countries. The data has been collected from the Department of Homeland Security – Customs and Border Protection’s Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) since July 2010. The APIS based “I-92” system provides air traffic data on the following parameters: number of passengers, by country, airport, scheduled or chartered, U.S. Flag, foreign flag, citizens and non-citizens.
