Dec. 20–MGM Resorts International has been selected by a state commission to build an $925 million casino resort in Prince George’s County.
The seven-member Video Lottery Facility Location Commission voted 5-2 in favor of awarding a license to MGM, which proposed a massive casino beside Interstate 95 at National Harbor.
With the vote, MGM’s proposal handily beat competing bids by Penn National Gaming, which proposed building a $700 million facility at its Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, and Greenwood Racing, which proposed a $761 million facility off Indian Head Highway nearby.
The MGM casino would become the state’s sixth casino when it opens in a few years. It’s targeted squarely at potential gamblers from Virginia and Washington, D.C. It also will bolster Maryland’s ability to challenge neighboring states for gambling dollars, including Pennsylvania, West Virginia and New Jersey, analysts said.
