March 20–Operators of Sacramento-area hotels started out 2014 with year-over-year improvements in occupancy, average daily room rates and revenue per room, according to the San Francisco office of hotel industry tracker/consultant PKF Consulting USA.

PKF said the average occupancy rate among area hotels in January was 61.5 percent, up from 59.7 percent in January 2013. The average daily room rate in January was $102.84, compared with $99.13 in January 2013. Average revenue per available room in January was $63.26, up 6.8 percent from $59.21 in the year-ago period.

Historically, January is a relatively slow time of year for hotel occupancy in the Sacramento area. For all of 2013, PKF said, the average occupancy rate of area hotels was 68.1 percent. Hotel industry analysts say the 70 percent threshold is generally where hotels can raise room rates and generate more revenue.

San Francisco led all Northern California regions in January, with a 74.9 percent occupancy rate and average revenue per available room of $176.25.
