June 12–Construction of a $13.3 million hotel on the North Shore is under way, a contractor said Thursday.
O’Hara-based Massaro Corp. said it broke ground on the 10-story, 135-room Holiday Inn Express & Suites at Federal Street and Cajou Way on Wednesday. Federal Street Hospitality Associates LP, affiliated with Kratsa Properties in Harmar, is the developer.
Massaro and Kratsa have teamed up on three other Pittsburgh hotels, including the SpringHill Suites and Residence Inn on the North Shore.
“Together we have a strong track record of developing hotels,” Eric Kratsa, executive vice president of Federal Street Hospitality, said in a statement.
Federal Street Hospitality received several extensions since entering into a development agreement in July 2009 with the city’s Sports & Exhibition Authority, which owns the property. Most recently, the developer planned to start construction in April, but sought an extension because it hired a new contractor — Massaro.
The project is expected to be completed by August 2015, Massaro said.
