WASHINGTON (February 1st, 2017)—U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow released the following statement upon Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao's confirmation by the U.S. Senate:
"The U.S. travel community applauds the Senate for confirming Elaine Chao to serve as America’s next Secretary of Transportation.
"Secretary Chao brings with her a wealth of experience working with and within the U.S. government and on transportation issues, and will undoubtedly be an extremely effective leader of DOT. It is entirely fitting, first and foremost, to appoint a former Deputy Secretary to the highest post in the U.S. Department of Transportation. Furthermore, Secretary Chao’s tenures as Director of the Peace Corps and as Secretary of Labor cement a deep base of knowledge about what keeps a country connected and thriving.
"Chao’s comments during her confirmation hearings indicate her strong understanding that sustained, focused investment in infrastructure modernization is crucial to keeping America competitive and spurring economic growth. As I’ve said before, she is exactly the kind of principled but pragmatic leader that can bring President Trump’s stated infrastructure aims to fruition.
"The U.S. travel industry enjoyed an excellent working relationship with outgoing Secretary Foxx’s department, and remains an eager and committed partner to the new administration. We look forward to working with Secretary Chao on solutions to infrastructure and transportation problems that will keep our country connected and competitive, and ensure travel’s continued place as a pivotal contributor to a flourishing U.S. economy."
