Dec. 20--The hotel construction industry is booming, and the greater Pittsburgh area has one of the fastest-growing hotel markets in the nation, data show. The region has 55 projects, totaling 6,012 rooms, in its hotel construction pipeline, for a rate of planned rooms relative to existing rooms of 23.6 percent -- the third highest in the country, according to Lodging Econometrics data compiled for the Tribune-Review. Dec. 20--The new ownership of the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas will undoubtedly institute changes to the resort. But the resort's workforce, apparently, will remain intact. The Culinary Union Local 226 said today that Cosmopolitan employees, whom the resort calls CoStars, will retain their employment through the sale. Gaming regulators gave their final blessing Thursday to the $1.73 billion sale to a division of Blackstone Group. Dec. 20--Tucson-based HSL Properties has purchased the Hilton El Conquistador Resort for $15 million, an executive says. HSL is planning to spend $16 million in rehabilitation and capital improvements on the hotel part of the resort, said Omar Mireles, executive vice president of HSL. Sale of the resort at 10000 N. Oracle Road closed Thursday. "We're hitting the ground running," he said. The purchase marks step one in a plan for Oro Valley to acquire El Conquistador Resort's country club and 45 holes of golf. Dec. 20--Miami Beach voters will decide the fate of a proposed hotel next to the soon-to-be-renovated convention center despite objections from one commissioner who felt building a hotel before developing mass transit would make Beach traffic worse. On Thursday, the city commission voted 6-1, with Commissioner Jonah Wolfson opposing, to let voters decide in November whether to approve a possible lease of city land for an 800-room hotel.
