Dec. 10--The groundbreaking for the 158-room Hilton Garden Inn and Edmond Conference Center on the northwest corner of Interstate 35 and Covell Road has been set for 2 p.m. Jan. 12, City Manager Larry Stevens said. Dec. 10--BELLEAIR -- Town commissioners approved a developer's plan Tuesday to raze most of the historic Belleview Biltmore hotel, transform part of a preserved west wing into a boutique inn and surround it with new condos and townhomes. After nearly six hours of testimony from redevelopment critics and supporters, commissioners voted 5-0 to grant St. Petersburg developer Mike Cheezem a demolition permit, site plan, development agreement and new zoning. Dec. 10--SAN JOSE -- Airbnb stays in Silicon Valley's capital will get more expensive after city officials approved one of the nation's first taxes on the online home-sharing service. The San Jose City Council on Tuesday night voted 7-3 to enforce a 10 percent tax on anyone who stays in a strangers' home through Airbnb, the same charge already levied against rooms booked at traditional hotels. Dec. 10--Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts' U.S. and France operations, will retire on June 1. She has overseen the parks' operations since 2011. Before that, she was president of Walt Disney World Resort since 2006. Crofton, who now works at Disney's headquarters in Burbank, Calif., has been with the company for 35 years. Dec. 10--Despite a restaurant fire that gutted the kitchen in October, a top hotel company completed its purchase of Kansas City's Savoy Hotel and Grill on Wednesday and said it will proceed with resurrecting the historic property. 21c Museum Hotels, a hotel company based in Louisville, Ky., that Conde Nast Traveler has rated among the best in the world, intends to turn the Savoy into a boutique hotel, chef-driven restaurant and contemporary art museum. Dec. 10--The Healdsburg Planning Commission has given the green light to construction of a 39-room, boutique hotel downtown. The four-story, H3 Guesthouse, proposed south of the Healdsburg Plaza, was approved by the commission Tuesday night. "The hotel that they presented is very nicely done," Planning Commission Vice Chairman Jerry Eddinger said Wednesday. "Everybody liked the design."
