Have a Net Worth of Over $1M? – You too Can Own a Part of Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs
April 16, 2014
April 16--If you're on your way to or from the sun-baked Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival this weekend and get the urge to become a hotel owner, you may be in luck -- as long as you have at least $10,000 to spend. Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs is seeking at least $1.5 million in online crowdfunding from individuals to bring new acts to the hotel, make improvements to its Rock Spa and maybe add a nightclub. Perks for investors will include free use of the hotel-owner poolside cabana, 25% discounts on room rates and free room upgrades. Naturally, this isn't quite a Kickstarter for real estate. The individuals who want a slice of th
Lodgic Hospitality Proposes New Homewood Suites Hotel for Tyler, Texas
April 16, 2014
April 16--A proposed extended-stay hotel project could start construction later this year, adding more than 100 rooms to the hundreds that have come into the market in recent years. The project, which is planned for the intersection of Golden Road and Old Troup Highway, would be a Homewood Suites by Hilton, said Amit Patel, with development company Lodgic Hospitality. Patel said the project remains in the development stage, and depending on a pre-development meeting next week with the city, the goal is to fit 113 rooms on the site. A potential zone change to allow for the proposed hotel development is slated to go before the Planning an
Beaumont, Texas Could Soon Have New Water Park & 200-room Embassy Suites Hotel
April 16, 2014
April 16--By summer 2015, Southeast Texas could have a water amusement park built on 10 acres of Jefferson County property near the Ford Park Exhibit Hall. And the year after that, convention-goers could be attracted to Beaumont because they'll have a 200-plus room hotel -- an Embassy Suites, perhaps -- built adjacent to the exhibit hall. Beaumont City Council and Jefferson County commissioners did their parts this week in approving 10-year incentives for the twin developments. John Hughes, Ford Park manager, said if the hotel developer is able to sign a contract to build an Embassy Suites, Beaumont would become that chain's smallest ma
Myrtle Beach Area Tourism Promoter Donald Wizeman Found Dead from Gunshot Wound in Apparent Suicide
April 16, 2014
April 16--Donald G. Wizeman, whose tourism and marketing accomplishments were often overshadowed by his stinging criticism of Myrtle Beach area business leaders, was found dead Tuesday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He was 69 years old. According to a report in The Baltimore Sun newspaper, Wizeman fatally shot himself inside an emergency room bathroom at the hospital. He was found with a gunshot wound to his chest shortly after midnight Tuesday morning, Baltimore police told the newspaper. Wizeman's wife, Kay Sherfick-Wizeman, told The Sun News that she had no indication her husband w
Belleair Commission Creates New Zoning District that Could Lead to Razing of Belleview Biltmore
April 16, 2014
April 16--BELLEAIR -- The Belleair Town Commission voted 4-1 Tuesday night to create a new zoning district a developer could apply for if he or she wanted to raze the historic Belleview Biltmore Resort and Spa and build condos or townhomes in its place. Current zoning on the Biltmore site allows only for a hotel or single-family homes. The new zoning option, RM-10, offers more flexibility and height than the town's two existing multifamily residential zoning designations. It allows up to 10 units per acre -- a density between the other two zoning categories -- and the potential for building heights up to 80 feet if the developer incorpo
Benjamin Rafter, CEO of Aqua Hotels, to Take on Dual Role of President of Aston Hotels & Resorts
April 15, 2014
April 15--Benjamin Rafter, who has served as president and CEO of Aqua Hotels and Resorts since 2008, will now take on the dual role of president of Aston Hotels & Resorts. In addition, Matt Bailey, who joined Aston earlier this year as its chief operating officer, also has been appointed Aqua's COO. The changes come about five months after Vacation Holdings Hawaii (VHH), a subsidiary of Miami-based Interval Leisure Group and owner of Aston Hotels & Resorts, bought Aqua Hospitality/Aqua Hotels & Resorts. The deal, which closed in December for an undisclosed amount, united two Hawaii hotel management powerhouses, who were onc
Portland’s The Grove Hotel: Inside the 5 Finalists Vying to Develop the Long Vacant Hotel
April 15, 2014
April 15--The Grove Hotel is officially back in the city's cross hairs, and five developers are ready to move forward with projects to redevelop the long-vacant hotel. And according to a public records request, unlikely previous development attempts, the developers largely aren't asking the Portland Development Commission to chip in on the project. The PDC, which bought the vacant hotel in 2010 for $3.7 million from Home Forward, solicited project proposals on February 6. The urban renewal agency received 11 formal proposals during five-week bidding window, and is considering five suitors to buy and redevelop The Grove Hotel. The Oregon
Dana Point Planning Commission Rejects Four-Star Doheny Hotel Proposal
April 15, 2014
April 15--DANA POINT -- Answering the call of a public chorus, the Dana Point Planning Commission on Monday night denied a five-story, four-star hotel proposed for the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Dana Point Harbor Drive. Though commisioners said they would like to see a hotel built in an area that many people describe as an eyesore, they agreed with the overwhelming sentiment in the audience that the Doheny Hotel would be too large for the site and would present too many challenges. Commissioner Norm Denton recused himself from the 4-0 vote because his homeowners association owns land close to the site. The decision is final unl
