Many Greeley, CO Hotels, Previously Struggling, Now Filled to Brim with Workers from Drilling Boom

April 14, 2014

April 14--Every morning, the men of the oil field file out of their rooms in waves, warming up their trucks and emptying parking lots that kept their vehicles all night long. The most common sight at any hotel in Greeley these days is big, heavy duty trucks, side by side, warming up for their days and pouring out of hotel parking lots. While the Wattenberg has boomed with the advent of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, companies have raced to be a part of it. And with them come their influx of workers, all who need a place to stay. The rush caught Greeley a little flat-footed in terms of rental housing. There hadn't been an

April 13, 2014

April 13--GARY -- In about a week, city officials say residents will start to notice progress on one of Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson's campaign promises: the demolition of the Sheraton Hotel. Working through the winter, contractors have been busy removing asbestos within the building. Joseph Van Dyk, director of the city's redevelopment department, expects the work will be completed by the end of this week. Contractors then will begin asbestos remediation on the outside, which could be done by June. The building will be demolished starting from the top down, like removing blocks from a Lego tower. "Really, floor-by-floor demolition is the

April 12, 2014

April 13--GLENWOOD -- While the developers of a proposed hotel and conference center in Glenwood are upbeat about their project, they face considerable hurdles, including persuading Lane County commissioners to pledge a $6 million subsidy. The local development group, Glenwood H&CC LLC, announced the project April 2. The group said it has secured the money needed to build the 150-suite riverfront hotel behind the Ramsey Waite equipment dealership. They estimate the hotel would cost nearly $26 million. Five days later, the Springfield City Council committed up to $2.5 million in public funds over the next decade to help build the adj

Ending Years of Turmoil, Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh Turnaround Complete After $15 Million Renovation

April 12, 2014

April 12--Kiran Patel says the days of turmoil at the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh are finally over. "The city and people at large want to see this property not as an eyesore," Patel, the hotel's owner since 2011, said this week. Nearly $15 million in renovations were completed in January, adding three floors to the front of the building, more meeting space and a pool with a breathtaking view of the Fort Pitt Bridge and the Point. But getting there was not easy. Patel, a Tampa physician and businessman, had to navigate the hotel out of bankruptcy, manage union unrest over a new contact, and complete the renovation project that was stalled f

April 12--As filmmakers continue to set their sights on the Steel City, area hotels are becoming accustomed to hosting movie A-listers and crews. "When the (Pittsburgh) Film Office calls and says a film wants to come to Pittsburgh, we drop everything," says Tom Hardy, past president of the Pittsburgh Hotel Association and current general manager of the Sheraton Station Square, which is undergoing a $15 million renovation. "It's become a very, very large part of our business." Design Trend of Immersive Art in Hotels Encourages Optimism About the Future

April 12, 2014

April 12--DURHAM -- In a Cincinnati hotel, there's an art installation along the walls leading to the spa that's designed to simulate the experience of walking through a wind-blown, grassy field. And in a hotel in Bentonville, Ark., an installation uses fishing line to make it look like a sudden gust of wind has blown 400 sheets of paper permanently into the air. Those are some of the pieces of "immersive art" that Alice Gray Stites, chief curator for Kentucky-based 21c Museum Hotels, said you might find in one of the company's hotels. The company has opened hotels in Cincinnati; Bentonville, Ark.; and Louisville, Ky., and is working to

Kaeding Management Acquires 288-room Radisson Hotel in Duluth, Minnesota; Plans Renovations

April 12, 2014

April 12--Carl Kaeding says the Radisson hotel in downtown Duluth is a beacon. The circular hotel with the rotating top floor certainly got his attention when it went up for sale last year. On Thursday, Kaeding Management of Bloomington, Minn., closed the deal and purchased the property. "It's certainly the most iconic hotel in Duluth if not the state," Kaeding said Friday while sitting in the lobby of the hotel. "Show anyone in the state a picture and they know what it is." He said the hotel has been "neglected" the past decade or so and he plans to bring a face-lift to "bring it back" and create more memories for visitors. Rooms were
