Starwood Hotels to Take Over Operations for Kempinski’s Two City Centre Hotels in Bahrain
March 30, 2014
March 30--MANAMA -- American hotel and leisure company Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide is taking over from Kempinski to operate the two hotel towers at Bahrain City Centre. Highly placed sources confirmed Starwood's two leading brands, Le Meridien and Sheraton, will manage the two-tower hotel currently housing the Kempinski Grand and Ixir Hotel. The GDN reported last week that Dubai-based Majid Al Futtaim Group, the owner and operator of Bahrain City Centre and Kempinski, had decided to end their management agreement for the hotel. The decision was taken as Kempinski has just one brand whereas Majid Al Futtaim wanted to adopt a tw
Gain The Respect Of Your Team By Being Wrong
Steve DiGioia | March 27, 2014
By Steve DiGioia As a manager, supervisor or leader of a team or department, we are always right. We always make the correct decisions, we always lead the team in the right direction, and we are the most qualified persons with all the answers. How wrong can this thinking be? Once we believe all this rhetoric we are doomed to fail. Doomed to fail ourselves and our team. Mid-level supervisors are especially susceptible to this way of thinking. They may have just been promoted from a "line-level" employee for doing their job well but now they are thrust into a supervisory position where they must not only oversee the actions of others but

March 27, 2014
March 27--NORTHWEST OTTAWA COUNTY -- Mother Nature has whitewashed the winter. The fate of the spring and summer tourism season may also rest in her hands. Grand Haven Area Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Marci Cisneros said she's banking on a 4 percent jump this year from the $59.2 million she said tourists plunked down in the area last year on lodging, food and beverages, entertainment, and gifts. "As always, there are some wild cards as to what impacts travel," Cisneros said. "The good news is, consumer confidence is on the rise. The not-so-good news is the slow start we are getting for spring travel, which could

March 27, 2014
March 27--A 23-acre, ocean-view property in Avila Beach may be the site of a 50-room boutique hotel, following its purchase by Somera Capital Management and Postcard Properties this month. The Santa Barbara-based firms bought the undeveloped property located near San Luis Bay Inn from local developer Rob Rossi for $2.4 million, according to Michelle Blasingame of Richardson Properties, which managed the deal. Neither company is releasing information about the proposed development, other than that the site was already zoned for a hotel. "Over the next several months, we will be studying our options and look forward to sharing these with

March 26, 2014
March 26--Las Vegas, not Honolulu, is the most expensive city for hotel room service in the U.S., according to research by TripAdvisor.com. Honolulu ranks at fifth-most expensive. The 2014 TripIndex Room Service study did a cost comparison of common items and services many travelers will experience, such as the cost of in-room amenities in 62 popular cities around the world, including 15 in the U.S. The study showed no correlation between expensive hotel rooms and pricey room service in the U.S., but both attributes were commonly found together internationally. The comparison includes the price of a club sandwich ordered through room se

Florida’s Belleview Biltmore’s Fate Remains Uncertain
March 25, 2014
March 26--BELLEAIR -- Stepping lightly around an activist's lawsuit, town officials took another step to jostle the Belleview Biltmore out of limbo Tuesday night. Town commissioners voted 4-1 to approve a preliminary measure that would create a new type of zoning with a density of 10 apartments or condos per acre with limited building heights of 32 feet, unless a development has a small enough footprint to qualify for more height. The new zoning does not currently apply to the hotel property, but it could in the future at the request of a developer. Deputy Mayor Steven Fowler cast the sole dissenting vote. A final vote takes place April
