Aurora, Colorado Residents Sue to Block Hotel and Conference Center Alleging Invalid Tax Subsidies

February 26, 2014

Feb. 26--Two Aurora residents filed suit against that city and its urban renewal authority Tuesday, alleging they skirted the state's Taxpayer's Bill of Rights when they approved tax subsidies to fund a proposed $824 million, 1,500-room hotel and conference center. It's the second suit seeking to block the Aurora project, which, like Colorado Springs' City for Champions proposal, is receiving state tax dollars as a key funding source. In September, seven Denver-area hotels and The Broadmoor sued Aurora, the state Office of Economic Development and International Trade and the Colorado Economic Development Commission. That suit alleged Au

Feb. 26--We aren't surprised by the findings of a recent study by the Senate Finance Committee. The report concluded that ATV visitors to the region are looking for additional hotel and motel rooms to stay in while riding the southern West Virginia-based Hatfield-McCoy Trail system. And many of these out-of-town visitors are looking for a high-end experience, including hotels with a nice pool and other amenities after a hard day riding on the trails. And why shouldn't they be looking for such higher-end accommodations? Many of these ATV riders are out-of-town visitors who are coming to our region to spend their hard-earned dollars. They

Long Beach, California Hotel Business Softens in January as the Market “Absorbs” New Airport Hotel

February 26, 2014

Feb. 26--Hotel occupancy and room prices softened in the Long Beach-area market in January, due to continued effects of a new hotel near Long Beach Airport, according to a research firm and industry experts. In the survey of Long Beach, Lakewood and Cerritos hotels, Smith Travel Research data show some softening in stays at hotels in the final three months of 2013, and a further decline of 4.7 percent in January, versus the same month in 2013, when it grew at a double-digit clip. "The market is absorbing the Marriott out by the airport," said Bruce Baltin, senior vice president of hotel consulting firm PKF Consulting USA in Los Angeles.

South Florida’s Hotel Occupancy Dips in January in Miami-Dade, Increases in Broward and Keys

February 25, 2014

Feb. 25--South Florida hotels commanded higher rates in January 2014 compared to a year ago, but Miami-Dade properties saw occupancy decline slightly. In January of 2013, Miami-Dade hosted both the Orange Bowl and the BCS National Championship, a matchup between Notre Dame and Alabama that packed hotels. Without that national college football game this year -- and with severe winter weather in key feeder markets that forced the cancellation of thousands of flights -- the region saw occupancy drop 1.7 percentage points, leaving hotels 81.7 percent full. Average daily rates were still up in Miami, though, increasing 5.5 percent to $221.42

Hope for Long-Vacant Allentown, PA Americus Center Hotel? City Endorses $13.2M Plan with Conditions

February 25, 2014

Feb. 25--The long-vacant Americus Center will get another chance to find its place in downtown Allentown's rebirth, but only if its owner agrees to recapture the days when its marble floors and crystal chandeliers made it one of the region's swankiest hotels. An Allentown arena authority committee Tuesday endorsed a $13.2 million plan to rehabilitate the 13-story hotel, but owner Albert Abdouche is going to have to meet conditions if he wants to tap Neighborhood Improvement Zone tax money. He'll have to hire a professional to manage the hotel, get bank financing within 120 days and agree to restore it well enough to attain at least a th
