Hotel & Motel Business in Midland & Odessa, TX Showing Signs of Cooling
January 23, 2014
Jan. 23--The motel and hotel industry in Midland is still posting year-over-year gains, but it's also starting to show signs of slowing down. The latest report from the state's Comptroller's Office shows that Midland Amotels and hotels collected $6,817,525.61 in taxable receipts in November, an 11.98 percent increase from the same month in 2012. The year-over-year increase is not, however, as steep as it was from November 2011 to November 2012, the data show. The taxable receipts totaled $6,000,633 in November 2012, which was about 19.88 percent more than the same month in 2011. Even though motels and hotels are still continuing to make

January 23, 2014
Jan. 23--For much of the time since "culinary" became a word that people actually used, the focus on beverage pairings has been on fancy dishes and wine. Not anymore. Two most welcome trends -- the craft-beer boom and consumers' increasing comfort with the once-forboding world of wine -- have brought us to a point where we can speculate, and of course debate, not just whether to have wine or beer with everyday foods (and Super Bowl party staples), but which type of each is best-suited for them. So here's the lowdown from beer guy Michael Agnew and wine guy Bill Ward on options for some of our favorite food-beverage combos. Burgers Beer:

It’s Time May Have Come: City of Tacoma Issues Request for Development of New Downtown Hotel
January 23, 2014
Jan. 23--Its time may have come: a new hotel downtown, four stars, at least 250 rooms, adjacent to the Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center. Such a project has long topped the list of wishes of tourism officials, and the City of Tacoma on Tuesday issued a "Request for Interest" directed at developers and hotel operators. The request asks for the expression of interest concerning a "high quality hotel and mixed-use development on an approximate two-acre, municipally owned site" adjoining the convention center located at South 17th Street and Broadway. The site, now given to parking, was identified as a location fit for a hotel ev
Going Independent, Charleston, SC Hotel Cuts Ties with Best Western in $10M Rebranding Effort
January 23, 2014
Jan. 23--A downtown Charleston hotel has traded its corporate label for an all-local image to better compete with the swarm of boutique hotels heading into the city. The King Charles Inn parted ways with the Best Western in November after 30 years with the corporate chain to rebrand itself as an independent operation. Local management group Charlestowne Hotels Inc, has owned the 91-room hotel at Meeting and Hassell streets since 1980. It's undergone many renovations over the years, but its latest update is perhaps the most dramatic yet. "We enjoyed our association with Best Western and thought that they were a good partner, but there ca
What Will Happen to Florida’s Belleview Biltmore? No One Seems to Know
January 23, 2014
Jan. 23--BELLEAIR -- Uncertainty about the Belleview Biltmore hotel's future only grew Wednesday after Belleair commissioners voted Tuesday to delay for six months a rezoning decision that could have resulted in demolition of the historic landmark and redevelopment of the land. Hotel admirers have sought a preservationist to buy and restore the 400-room hotel, built in 1895 and closed in 2009. Since that hasn't happened, the town staff proposed a new zoning category that would let something other than a hotel or single-family homes be built where the Biltmore stands. But in a 3-2 vote Tuesday, commissioners decided to wait, telling staf
