January 22, 2014
Jan. 22--ALBANY -- Claude Long of the Hilton Albany downtown has pulled off a major upset by winning the 2014 outstanding bellman of the year award sponsored by the New York State Hospitality & Tourism Association. Beating out bellmen at New York City's world-class hotels and bringing the honor to Albany for the first time in a decade is a little like the Tri-City ValleyCats defeating the New York Yankees. "Claude exudes hospitality," said human resources coordinator Pam Mislak, who nominated Long. "He makes an amazing first impression." For Hilton guests arriving from out of town, Long, 55, who is in his 15th year as a bellman, is

Airbnb Profits Prompted San Francisco Eviction Claims Ex-tenant; Now Suing Previous Landlord
January 22, 2014
Jan. 22--After almost a decade in his rent-controlled apartment on San Francisco's Russian Hill, Chris Butler was evicted on the grounds that the owner's husband needed to move in. Instead, he said, the owner shuffled around existing tenants and listed two of the four units in the building on short-term rental site Airbnb for $125 and $145 a night -- considerably more than the $1,840 a month Butler paid. "There are laws in place for decades related to these types of issues," he said. "They forced me out of a home I loved. It was incredibly difficult to find a place, especially because I have a really old dog. I ended up paying over doub

Millennium Hotels & Resorts Closes Downtown St. Louis, MO Millennium Hotel; Leaves Tower in Limbo
January 22, 2014
Jan. 22--After 45 years, the spinning stopped. The Millennium, the downtown hotel with the rooftop restaurant that went around and around, closes today without a redevelopment plan in sight. But at least the 28-story, cylindrical hotel that opened in 1969 won't look abandoned. The owner, Millennium Hotels and Resorts, will maintain some utilities, keep an elevator in operation and won't board up any windows, said Otis Williams, executive director of the St. Louis Development Corp. SLDC, the city's development agency, remains in talks with the hotel's owner about what it plans to do with the site, at 200 South Fourth Street, Williams sai
