Jan. 22--A Virginia company wants to reshape the Florida State Fairgrounds with an amateur sports village, a sports-themed hotel, water park, indoor virtual golf facility and a "restaurant park." One thing missing from Republic Land Development's proposal is a baseball stadium for the Tampa Bay Rays. Jan. 22--Orange County hotels headed into the holidays in November with two-thirds of their rooms occupied and rates up a healthy 4 percent over November 2012, reported PKF Consulting in Los Angeles. Costa Mesa topped the market for occupancy, with 76 percent of the city's hotels full, compared with 69 percent in November a year earlier. Countywide occupancy averaged 67.7 percent. Jan. 22--Hotel room occupancy inched higher in Chicago last year, but still hit a new record with a slightly bigger slice of rooms filled than the banner pre-recession mark in 2007. Hotel occupancy was 75.28 percent last year, according to the mayor's office and Choose Chicago, the city's tourism and convention agency. That's just 0.2 percent higher than 2012, but it tops the 2007 record of 75.18 percent. Hotel room demand rose 2.3 percent from last year, also hitting a record at 9.889 million rooms occupied. Jan. 21--BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport is moving forward with plans to build a hotel and introduce technology that will allow passengers to check their own bags.
