FCC Launches Inquiry on Effectiveness of Universal 911 System in Hotels After Woman’s Stabbing Death
January 14, 2014
Jan. 14--Kari Hunt Dunn's daughter had always been taught to dial 911 in an emergency. On Dec. 1, Dunn was stabbed to death in the bathroom of a Marshall, Texas, motel room. Her 9-year-old daughter, who was in room with her two siblings, tried to call 911 four times -- just as she had learned. But in this emergency, none of the calls got through. "She didn't know she was supposed to dial an extra 9 first to get an outside line," said Hank Hunt, Dunn's father and grandfather of the 9-year-old. The family tragedy prompted Hunt, 54, to begin a petition on Change.org called "Let Hotel Phones Dial 911 Easily: Help Enact Kari's Law," which ha
Caribbean Tourism Matters: Timing Can be Everything
January 14, 2014
Jan. 14--It is now more than two months since the former Casuarina Beach Resort was re-branded as Sandals Barbados and government granted the company unprecedented extraordinary concessions, creating probably the single largest unlevel playing field the private sector tourism industry has encountered in its long history. Timing sometimes can be everything and, following nearly two years of long stay visitor decline, the anticipated revenue generated through the critical two-week Christmas and New Year period, perhaps has never been so pivotal to the survival of the industry, as we enter 2014. On reflection, it appears to me that there h

In Response to New Competition in Town, Allentown, Pennsylvania Holiday Inn to Launch Renovation
January 14, 2014
Jan. 14--When developers revealed plans for a new hotel attached to Allentown's downtown arena, some wondered what would become of the Holiday Inn at 9th and Hamilton Streets. Optimists said the new 180-room Renaissance Hotel, with stylishly decorated guest rooms and brand new banquet facilities would simply force other properties to raise their games to compete and survive, a good thing for downtown. Consider the Holiday Inn's game raised. Its owners have asked the Allentown Neighborhood Improvement Zone Authority to endorse a $1.8 million loan they would repay at least in part with state and local tax revenues generated by the hotel,

Jan. 14--TAMPA -- Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik's initial plans for developing his massive Channel District land holdings appear to include a new hotel next to the Forum, public documents show. Meantime, other documents suggest the team owner is considering major roadwork a few blocks away in the Channel District to allow for more real estate development and better traffic flow. Vinik and his Colorado partners have been buying up swaths of land surrounding the Forum for more than two years. Today they own at least 21 acres stretching from Florida Avenue in the west to Meridian Avenue in the east. Vinik also has shown an interest
Charlotte, NC Moves Closer to Development of Proposed $72 Million Sports/Hotel/Retail Complex
January 14, 2014
Jan. 14--By voting Monday to buy and eventually tear down an Econo Lodge hotel on Independence Boulevard, the Charlotte City Council is making a $3.6 million bet that an amateur sports complex at Bojangles' Coliseum will come to fruition. In February 2012, former City Manager Curt Walton took out a $50,000 option to buy the hotel adjacent to Ovens Auditorium. A month later, Walton unveiled a nearly $1 billion capital plan, which included $25 million to remake the area into an amateur sports hub. Last fall, the city asked developers for proposals for the amateur sports concept, which would include a hotel and a large gymnasium/field hous

Paul Verdi, general manager of Renault, said the resort is under an agreement of sale and the buyer is examining the financial and other details involved with the transaction.
