Atlantic Club Closing Signals Need for New Strategy in Shrinking Casino Market for Atlantic City
January 12, 2014
Jan. 12--When Atlantic Club Casino Hotel closes its doors Monday morning, it will mark only the third time in the city's history that a casino has shut down. But unlike the gambling halls that have closed before it -- shuttered amid unfulfilled promises of bigger and grander operations to replace what had failed -- this time, experts say, the closing comes with uncertainty for the property's future and what might come next for Atlantic City. Politicians, officials and analysts called Atlantic Club's closing inevitable; the casino has struggled for years, and it only recently gained ground with locals after years spent pursuing a sale. T
More than $1 Billion Being Invested to Buy, Build or Renovate Casinos along South Mississippi Coast
January 12, 2014
Jan. 12--A new heyday of casino development is transforming South Mississippi's market in a way not seen since the 1990s, when Mississippi became the third state to legalize casinos. More than $1 billion is being spent to buy, build and renovate casinos along the Coast. In a little more than two years, four of the Coast's 12 casinos sold or have a sale pending, for a total investment of $653 million. Hard Rock Biloxi's new Platinum hotel tower will open in a few weeks, and hotels will start going up soon at the Margaritaville Casino Biloxi and Silver Slipper. Add to that the renovation of all the hotel rooms at Grand Biloxi, Golden Nugg
Cobblestone Hotels Plans 44-room Hotel for Charlestown, Indiana
January 12, 2014
Jan. 12--CHARLESTOWN -- As Charlestown continues to grow in the shadow of River Ridge and the plans of east-end bridge, it's reached the stage to have overnight guests. For the first time in decades, a hotel will stand in Charlestown, offering a bed and blanket to out-of-town visitors, officials say. Charlestown Mayor Bob Hall said Cobblestone Hotels will be open for vacancy with a 44-room hotel before the end of the year. The building will sit on 1.6 acre lot off Ind. 62, just east of Ind. 3 that leads directly into central Charlestown. Dennis Frankenberger, a partner of Charlestown Landing, the expected site of the hotel, said the bui
Oklahoma Files Suit Against Pointe Vista Development Claiming Developer has Completely Failed
January 11, 2014
Jan. 11--A state agency claims in a lawsuit it filed against Pointe Vista Development LLC that the developer "completely failed" in its efforts to build a four-star hotel on Lake Texoma and should be forced to move ahead with the project or sell the former state park land back to Oklahoma. In a statement, Gov. Mary Fallin's spokesman said that she and the other members of The Commissioners of the Land Office felt that taking legal action was the only option they had left. "The legal action they took will move the Pointe Vista issue off high-center and closer to a solution that leads to economic development and allows the state and local
Prime Hospitality Seeking to Build an Autograph Collection Hotel on Old American Outdoors Site
January 10, 2014
Jan. 10--Earthmovers and other construction equipment are clearing the way for a multi-building "boutique hotel" at the old American Outdoors RV Park bayfront lot at mile marker 97.5. Specifics are few, as the developers seek "a multitude of approvals" from the county, said Larry Abbo, chief executive officer of Prime Hospitality Group, the developer. But what is known is that Prime Hospitality wants to build a 15-building hotel on the 14-acre site. The project also calls for 160 parking spaces, Abbo said. There is no rendering of the hotel released yet, but it will be part of Marriot's boutique Autograph Collection, Abbo said. Joseph H
San Carlos, CA Seeks Hotel Developer for City-Owned Parcel; May Require ‘Prevailing Wages’
January 10, 2014
Jan. 10--Whoever builds a hotel in San Carlos on city-owned land near Highway 101 may have to pay "prevailing" wages to the project's construction workers. That is one of the conditions the city council will be asked to approve Monday when it considers requesting proposals from hotel developers. According to city staff recommendations, developers should be prepared to design, finance and build one or two hotels with at least 200 rooms on the four-acre site near Industrial Road and East San Carlos Avenue that the council in November agreed to buy for $13.7 million. The hotels should be nationally branded or at least "not less than 3-star
