New $18 Million, 135-room East End Hilton Garden Inn Taking Shape in Akron, Ohio

Dec. 07--The East End Hilton Garden Inn is slowly taking shape near the former Goodyear corporate headquarters on East Market Street. The $18 million, 135-room full-service hotel, the first new hotel to be built in Akron since 1980, is expected to be finished next year. Renovations at Goodyear Hall are also expected to start before the year ends to turn the site into 107 apartments, a fitness center and more. Work is expected to be finished in 2015. The project developer, California-based Industrial Realty Group, is financing the hotel with help from the Development Finance Authority of Summit County and PNC Bank's Tax Credit Investment

Dec. 07--Plans for a new hotel in Eagan -- the first in the city since 2002 -- appear to be moving forward in the Cedar Grove redevelopment area. The Economic Development Authority last week approved a plan for a 123-room limited service hotel to be developed by St. Paul-based Morrissey Hospitality Companies. The company manages several hotels, including the St. Paul Hotel and Hotel Minneapolis. The EDA also directed city staff members to prepare an agreement to sell Morrissey a nearly one-acre site for about $491,000 and pay an additional $489,000 for the use of 129 stalls in an adjacent parking garage. The city placed fifth among the Top 20 destinations in the world -- up a rank from last year -- placing behind San Francisco, Paris, New York City and London. Dec. 06--Investment Corporation of Dubai, or ICD, Dubai government's investment arm, said on Thursday that it had acquired Atlantis Hotel from Istithmar World, a unit of Dubai World. "Our acquisition of an asset that is a major contributor to the domestic tourist industry is in line with our overall strategy to support long term, sustainable growth for Dubai," Khalifa Al Daboos, deputy chief executive officer of ICD, said in the statement.
