Tourism Report: Visitors to New Mexico Inject More Cash into State’s Economy in 2013
November 30, 2013
Nov. 30--State Tourism Secretary Monique Jacobson had some happy news about the tourist industry when she recently testified before the Legislative Finance Committee: More tourists are coming to New Mexico, and they're spending more money here. According to a report from the Tourism Department, there were 32 million overnight and day visitors in 2012, a gain of 2.6 percent from the 31.2 million visits in 2011. The previous high was in 2008, with 31.4 million visits. The figures are based upon the New York-based Longwoods International, which studies American leisure and business travel behavior. Tourists spent an estimated $5.9 billion
American Wines Shine in Top 100 Wines of 2013
November 30, 2013
Nov. 30--If the past is prelude, then my conclusion from last year's Top 100 Wines -- that we're entering a glorious age for American wine -- is even truer in 2013. The top wines coming from the West Coast right now are the best in a generation. They excel in familiar forms we know and love, like Pinot Noir and Cabernet. Yet they push boundaries, they pursue greatness with grapes both long forgotten and newly discovered on these shores. They represent a great momentum that is changing the way Americans enjoy wine. This year's Top 100, which seeks the most outstanding wines in the West, celebrates bottles that are helping to change the c

Nov. 30--GLASGOW -- Mammoth Cave National Park invites those interested in proposed improvements to lodging facilities at the national park to express their comments in writing online or by letter to national park officials. A call for public comment on improvements to lodging facilities at Mammoth Cave was made by officials earlier this week. According to a press release issued by Mammoth Cave on Tuesday, the national park began its planning in 2010. Public comment was also sought at the time, which revealed people favor clean, comfortable lodging and a majority of people stated an interest in rustic cabins, a variety of food and bever
Luxury 54-room Hotel, The Petaluman, Planned for Downtown Petaluma, California
November 30, 2013
Nov. 30--Downtown Petaluma may be home to Wine Country's next luxury accommodations, and developers are hoping the plan will be embraced, unlike recent swanky hotel proposals in Sonoma and Healdsburg. In both of those tourist-dependent cities, plans for new hotels have been met with controversy recently. A group of Healdsburg residents is considering seeking a ballot measure limiting the size of hotels, similar to an unsuccessful measure in Sonoma that was defeated last month. As Petaluma works to attract more tourists, a new hotel likely won't generate as much opposition, at least related to the use and number of rooms. But its modern
Syria War Taking Toll on Lebanon Hotel Industry; Occupancy Rate 10% Lower than other Arab Markets
November 29, 2013
Nov. 29--BEIRUT -- A leading hotelier warned Thursday of grave consequences to Lebanon's hotel industry if the crisis in Syria persists. "If the situation in Syria remains the same, the hotel industry will be in real danger because many hotels witnessed a sharp drop in their business this year, [with] many of them indebted to banks," co-owner of the Phoenicia Intercontinental Hotel Marwan Salha told The Daily Star in an interview. Salha said banks might be able to support hotels in the near future but he doubted they'd be able to do it for too long. He argued that although the Central Bank gave subsidized loans, these were too small rel
Dubai’s Winning Bid for World Expo 2020 to Boost UAE Real Estate and Tourism Sector
November 29, 2013
Nov. 29--JEDDAH -- With Dubai winning the World Expo 2020 bid, the emirate requires around $43 billion (47 percent of the estimated 2013 GDP) to significantly upgrade its infrastructure according to a research report by Deutsche Bank. This will boost employment, population and tourist growth. A bulk of this investment will go into expanding the hotel and leisure industry, while around $10 billion will be spent to improve transportation infrastructure. The biggest beneficiary should be the real estate sector, which has to cater to the increased demand for new hotel and infrastructure projects. Deutsche Bank's report continues to see posi
Developers to Build 170-room Henderson Beach Parkside Resort Hotel in Crystal Beach, Destin, Florida
November 29, 2013
Nov. 29--With a preliminary approval in place to construct a Tier III project near Crystal Beach, developers for the Henderson Beach Resort project are moving forward with a scaled back Tier I hotel -- for now. "The owners want to vest their property rights and move forward with phase one of this project," said Shannon Howell, of Devcon Services Group, who has been associated with the project for the past six years. "We could, and probably would upgrade this project in the future." The project is expected to be called the Henderson Beach Parkside Resort Hotel and would be a 170-room luxury hotel adjacent to Henderson Beach State Park. T
Hawaiian Tourist Numbers Drop for Second Month in a Row; Pace Still Ahead of 2012
November 28, 2013
Nov. 28--Visitor arrivals and spending declined in October for the second month a row, an indication the high cost of a vacation in Hawaii is slowing growth in the state's No. 1 industry. Total October arrivals dropped 1.6 percent to 636,245 mostly due to a decline in the number of tourists from the U.S. and the cruise ship market, according to the Hawaii Tourism Authority. The numbers are in keeping with a trend of slower growth in the tourism industry since July. HTA president and CEO Mike McCartney said the declines in September and October are expected to continue through the rest of the year and into 2014. "Visitors have become mor
