Celebrated Chef Charlie Trotter Died of a Stroke Says Medical Examiner

November 25, 2013

Nov. 25--Celebrated chef Charlie Trotter died of a stroke earlier this month, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Test results after an autopsy determined that Trotter "died of a cerebrovascular accident (a stroke) as a consequence of hypertensive arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease (high blood pressure)," Cook County Medical Examiner Stephen Cina said. "Neither drugs nor alcohol contributed to his death," he said. "Additionally, there is no scientific evidence to indicate that recent travel contributed to his death, though there was evidence of a prior stroke." The 54-year-old chef was found unconscious and not

Measure Prohibiting Sonoma Hotel Expansion Narrowly Fails

November 25, 2013

Nov. 25--The final count from last week's election in the city of Sonoma has confirmed defeat of a measure limiting the size of new hotels -- the end results showing Measure B lost by 124 votes, the Sonoma County Registrar of Voters said. Opponents of the Hotel Limitation Measure garnered 51.6 percent of the overall vote, or 2,032 ballots cast. Those in favor represented 48.4 percent of the vote, or 1,908, with all absentee and provision ballots counted, officials said. The ballot measure would have prohibited construction or expansion of lodging facilities beyond 25 rooms, unless the city were to attain an annual occupancy rate of 80,

Tacoma’s Foss Waterway Hotel Legal Battle Victory Goes to Hotel Proponents – For Now

November 25, 2013

Nov. 25--The proponents of building a new Marriott Residence Inn on Tacoma's Thea Foss Waterway have won yet another legal battle with the owners of downtown Tacoma's Murano Hotel. But the legal and political war, already in its fourth year, may not be over yet. Hotel backers say their opponents have indicated they may appeal Friday's summary dismissal from Pierce County Superior Court Judge John McCarthy. Neither the plaintiff's attorney nor a spokeswoman for Provenance Hotels, which operates the Murano, was available for comment Monday. McCarthy dismissed the suit brought by KS Tacoma, the entity that owns the Murano. KS Tacoma had su

November 24, 2013

Nov. 24--Joel Hartman has a fancy room at the Omni Hotel at CNN Center, where he gets free meals and a fridge full of Cokes, but he still can't pass a trash can without digging in. "Chick-fil-A makes good lemonade," he said, fishing a Styrofoam cup from a green city garbage receptacle on Marietta Street in downtown Atlanta. "I am thirsty." He mixed it with another cup of Chick-fil-A tea, and kept walking. Hartman, 36, has been homeless but is living comfortably for a time after famously rescuing a French woman's wallet -- credit cards and all -- from a trash can at the corner of Marietta and Forsyth streets. He figured she was from out

Philadelphia is a “Hassle”; Business Goes Elsewhere, Convention Center Aims to Turn Things Around

November 24, 2013

Nov. 24--Summer ended on a sour note at the Convention Center. And the forecast for bookings is not good. Three big trade shows -- for coin collectors, lighting suppliers, and health-care and biotech companies -- are not returning to Philadelphia. The big complaint: Philadelphia is a "hassle," said Jack Ferguson, president of the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau, which lines up shows for the center. In surveys, he said, customers cited problems with labor costs and "jurisdictional issues" -- and the balkanized union work rules for who does what on the convention floor. "You can't have that mix in today's competitive world,"

Slow Economic Growth Delays Marriott’s India Expansion Plan Says Simon Cooper

November 23, 2013

Nov. 23--NEW DELHI -- Simon Cooper , president and managing director of Asia Pacific at Marriott International Inc., said the company's plan to run 100 hotels in India by 2015 has been delayed because of slowing economic growth in the country. The hotel operator now expects to reach the target by 2017-18, Cooper said in an interview. Edited excerpts: Are you on target to operate 100 hotels in India? About two years ago, our chief executive officer did say that we would have 100 hotels by 2015, when India's GDP (gross domestic product) was growing at 8% and the economic climate was a lot better. That time we had just announced our invest
