Chinese Developer Buys Torrance Marriott South Bay Hotel in California for $74 Million

Nov. 23--The Torrance Marriott South Bay, a 17-story hotel next to Del Amo Fashion Center, has been sold to a Chinese real estate developer for $74 million. Sichuan Xinglida Group Enterprises Co., which has built numerous mixed-use projects in mainland China, bought the hotel through its U.S. subsidiary XLD Group, real estate broker John Strauss said. The new owner will keep Marriott as the operator of the 487-room hotel but plans to renovate the property and eventually reposition it as a more upscale inn, said Strauss of Jones Lang LaSalle. Nov. 22--PALMETTO -- Venice- based developer Harry Walia, who wanted to bring a Hyatt Hotel to Palmetto, submitted revised plans in hopes of bringing the city its first hotel. This month the city commission voted 4 to 1 to deny Walia's request to for a hotel to be built in the Riviera Dunes community, after residents filled council chambers to oppose the deal. Firm Controlled by Bill Gates, Cascade Investment, Buyer of Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta

Nov. 22--Host Hotels & Resorts Inc. announced Thursday that it has sold the 244-room Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta and its office space in Midtown for $62 million to a private investment firm controlled by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. The five-star hotel, which opened in March 1997 at 75 14th Street, will remain a Four Seasons, according to the buyer, Cascade Investment. The hotel occupies the lower third of the 53-floor building, with 226 guest rooms and 18 suites. (See photos). Cascade spokesman Rick Matthews told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Friday the company is acquiring the hotel and 99,000 square feet of office space.

$60-Million Mixed-Use Development at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan to Include Hotel

Nov. 22--A parking lot at Cass and Canfield in Midtown Detroit will be turned into a nine-story mixed-use building under an agreement approved today by the Wayne State University Board of Governors. The $60-million-plus development is expected to open in 2016. The building will include approximately 248 market-rate apartments, 19,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space, a hotel with up to 120 rooms and a conference center with capacity for up to 300 people.
