Large Groups Pulling Back from Booking at Miami Beach Convention Center
November 7, 2013
Nov. 07--Large groups are pulling back from booking the Miami Beach Convention Center after voters approved rules that make it harder to proceed with a major renovation of the city-owned facility. The center's manager on Wednesday warned city commissioners he needed to "stop the bleeding" on the heels of one convention canceling its large event in 2016 and two others warning they may do the same. This week, the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans canceled plans for a 2016 meeting in Miami Beach, saying in a letter that "anything less than first-class facilities will adversely impact the ability of the Foundation to conduc

November 7, 2013
Nov. 07--The nearly century-old Stevens Building in downtown Portland has changed hands, and signs point to a possible future as a restored hotel. The first clue is the buyer of record's name: Stevens Hotel LLC paid $4.35 million for the building, at 812 S.W. Washington St., in a deal that closed Oct. 21. The Church of Scientology acquired the Stevens Building for $5.4 million in 2008 as a future Portland headquarters. Tenants in the building say the new owners are Arthur Mut

November 6, 2013

Trotter, who was found dead Tuesday morning in Chicago at age 54, loved wine. And the successive sommeliers, some of the best in the world, who worked with him over the 25 years he owned Charlie Trotter's had amassed a phenomenal cellar. The Christie's auction literature quotes the chef as commenting: "Seeing some of the rare gems from my cellar at auction today felt a bit like parting with old friends at times, but it was grat

Charlie Trotter 1959-2013: Chicago’s Revolutionary Chef Found Dead in Home
November 6, 2013
Nov. 06--Before there was "Top Chef," "MasterChef" or "Iron Chef," before chefs were multimedia celebrities who could monetize their volcanic personalities, before "farm-to-table" and "American cuisine" were routinely applied to high-end restaurants, there was Charlie Trotter, whose self-named Lincoln Park restaurant became one of Chicago's premier cultural institutions almost immediately after its 1987 opening. Charlie Trotter's was an international destination and a pioneer in creating a bold, distinctly American form of haute cuisine, and its chef-owner was an inspirational and notoriously mercurial figure, qualities that the people
