Oct. 17--The Carolina Beach Town Council next month will consider a conditional-use permit for a Hampton Inn & Suites hotel that is proposed for the oceanfront near the Boardwalk. The hotel, which would go up at 1 Harper Ave., is proposed for eight stories and 100 rooms, said town senior planner Jeremy Hardison. Plans have been in motion for at least six years to build a beachfront hotel near Carolina Beach's Boardwalk. A proposal for a 200-room Hilton Garden Inn on the site that was approved in 2007 fell through, a victim of the recession. Oct. 17--GULFPORT -- A 50-year lease was signed Thursday morning by officials with Island View Casino and the Mississippi State Port Authority. It begins with a 10-year lease and has multiple extensions. The terms require Island view to invest at least $30 million on the site south of U.S. 90. Island View owner Rick Carter recently announced he and co-owner Terry Green will spend $50 million to restore the former Gulfport Grand Casino tower on the beach. Oct. 14--The Jefferson County Commissioners' Court voted in a 3-1 decision to issue a request for development proposals (RFP) for a Ford Park convention hotel and water park at a meeting on Monday. Oct. 13--The Akron Aeros must book 1,400 hotel room nights a season for visiting baseball teams. After the University of Akron converted the former Quaker Square hotel to student housing this summer, team owner Ken Babby had to find another place to host the visiting players, coaches and umpires for the rest of the season.
