October 9, 2013
Oct. 09--Just as with other communities across the country, the Mountain Area is scrambling to adjust to a second week of economic hardship because of the government shutdown, which shows no signs of ending any time soon. "Last week, we saw a slowdown," said General Manager Bill Putnam with Best Western Yosemite Gateway Inn, "but now we are seeing a definite impact because of the closure of Yosemite. "We've had quite a few cancellations, understandably so, and because of this, we've already cut the hours of our housekeeping and restaurant staff. This affects the entire community, because if the staff isn't making money, they won't be ou

October 9, 2013
Oct. 09--The owner of the DoubleTree by Hilton will have to wait a few months before the city considers his request for tax breaks to build a new Downtown hotel. Consultants will review the proposal before city development staff makes a recommendation to the City Council. "The consultant will tell us what the occupancy rate would be, what the rate per night would be, what the construction costs are, what the management costs are," said Mathew McElroy, director of the City Development Department. "If there's a gap, a need, that's where the city would participate." The City Council on Tuesday took no action on the proposal by attorney and

Culinary Union Launches Blog Aimed at the Demise of the Cosmopolitan’s Reputation
October 8, 2013
Oct. 08--The Culinary Union has cracked open another chapter in its campaign against the Cosmopolitan. First, it was pickets and prolonged protests. Now, it's culinaryconfidential.org, a hotel review blog aimed at the demise of the Cosmopolitan's reputation. While the site's tagline claims it offers an insider perspective on the hospitality industry from the vantage of the Las Vegas Strip, Culinary officials say it's really the latest shot in the union's war against the $4 billion Strip resort, where some 2,000 workers have been clocking in without a labor contract for more than two years. Officials of the Cosmopolitan, owned by Deutsch
El Paso, Texas Officials Consider Tax Incentive for Development of a New Downtown Hotel
October 8, 2013
Oct. 08--City Council is scheduled to contemplate a difficult question today, and El Pasoans may get a first real look at the direction this relatively new group plans to take in the future. To be pondered: If a new 15-story Downtown hotel is built, should the owner get $3 million in tax incentives? Now he wants to build a $17 million Courtyard by Marriott Hotel adjacent to the DoubleTree. In 2009, council was gung-ho on Downtown revitalization, and restoring that old hotel was conside

Shift4 Corporation | October 7, 2013
by Bob Lowe EMV (Europay, MasterCard, Visa), Chip Cards, Smart Cards, Chip and PIN, Chip and Choice – they can't even decide what we're going to call it, let alone how exactly it will work; yet they expect hoteliers to be working on implementation plans.
