September 26, 2013
Sept. 26--MGM Resorts International presented an early look Wednesday at the design for its proposed $800 million casino and resort at National Harbor in Prince George's County -- a glassy echo of Washington monuments atop a 1,600-foot-long stepped pedestal. MGM is one of three companies bidding for a license to build the state's sixth casino, to be located in the suburban D.C. county. The other bidders are Penn National Gaming, a casino and racetrack operator already in Maryland, and Greenwood Racing, which owns Pennsylvania's most successful casino. MGM's casino would sit above a pedestal terraced to handle the site's 90-foot elevatio
Gaming Executives Say United States Casino Industry has Reached Saturation Point with Few Exceptions
September 26, 2013
Sept. 26--Saturation has arrived in the gaming industry and except for a few outposts -- namely the state of Texas -- there aren't many places in the United States where a player can't drive three hours or less to get to a casino, a panel of gaming industry executives concluded in a wide-ranging panel on industry issues. "New England is saturated," said Penn National Gaming President Tim Wilmott. "The market is crowded in Ohio. It's a little underserved in Florida." So what does that mean for companies in the business? Panelists said it means growth will occur by acquisition and mergers and possibly diversification into the online world
Ending a 20-Month Run, Hawaii’s Visitor Arrivals and Spending Moderate
September 26, 2013
Sept. 26--Arrivals from Hawaii's largest visitor market, the U.S. West, contracted in August ending a 20-month run of increases and causing spending from this core market to drop, too. The state welcomed 1.3 percent fewer travelers from its core U.S. West region and the 301,323 visitors only spent $412.7 million, which represented a 1.7 percent drop from August of 2012, according to statistics released today by the Hawaii Tourism Authority. The drop in Hawaii's top market was partially offset by increases in arrivals and spending from the U.S. East, Canada and emerging international visitor source markets; however, total visitor arrival
De Jongh: Government Issues Expression of Interest for Potential Hotel Development on Water Island
REVPAR International | September 25, 2013
Community input into development that affects residential communities is an issue that Governor John P. de Jongh Jr. admits is personal to him. Water Island is no exception to that rule and earlier this month, de Jongh held a meeting with Water Island residents to address management issues and to announce the issuance of an Expression of Interest for potential hotel development on the island. "We believe that a boutique hotel on Water Island not only provides for further economic activity on the island but a first-step on rebranding our offerings through a public-private partnership that leverages government resources. But, success is o

September 25, 2013
Sept. 25--FORT WORTH -- Construction may start next year on a six-story hotel in the city's Cultural District, along with a new office building and parking garage, the project's developer said. Plans call for the new 156-room hotel to face Camp Bowie Boulevard, across from the Modern Art Museum, as the latest expansion of Museum Place, the 12-acre residential, office and retail development at University Drive and West Seventh Street. The hotel will be adjacent to a six-story, 90,000-square-foot office building, said Tony Landrum, principal of TLC urban, the development group that joined JaGee Holdings in Museum Place a few years back. Seattle, WA Parking Lot Nets Hefty Price, Nearly Double the Previous Contract, From Hotel Developer
September 25, 2013
Sept. 25--A hotel developer is buying a downtown Seattle parking lot for $16.75 million, almost twice what the property was previously under contract for, underscoring strong demand for hotels in the city. Stanford Hotels, a San Francisco-based developer, was approved to buy the property by a court last Friday after it outbid Colorado-based Stonebridge Cos., which had a contract to buy it for about $8.5 million, said Craig Hill, a broker at NAI Puget Sound Properties. An official at Stanford Hotels said the company had no comment. A King County Superior Court judge overseeing the receivership approved the sale last week, records show. T
