Sept. 16--PLAINS TWP. -- Mohegan Sun At Pocono Downs has started taking reservations today for its new seven-story, 238-room hotel. The opening day is set for Nov. 30, though that could be moved up if construction progress warrants it. Mike Bean, president and general manager of Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, said the Nov. 30 date is one all parties involved feel 100 percent confident that the property will be ready to greet guests. Sept. 15--Westin Annapolis is banking on a $5 million renovation project to help boost its market share. The Park Place hotel is in the midst of upgrading 225 rooms and hallways, including new shower heads and windows. That portion of the work will begin in November and all of the work is expected to be complete by Valentine's Day. For now, the most visible change has been creating meeting space out of what was once the Annapolis Grill. Sept. 14--The planned 1,200-room convention hotel to be built just west of McCormick Place will be operated by Marriott International Inc., convention officials decided Friday. The hotel, expected to open in late 2016 next to the West Building, will be a Marriott Marquis, the company's premium convention center brand. The board of the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority approved the 10-year contract for hotel operations. Sept. 14--Denial by the state Land Board on Friday on a request to grant another delay in the due date of a $250,000 lease payment for the financially troubled Naniloa Volcanoes Resort in Hilo prompted the hotel's bankruptcy trustee to begin plans for the potential shutdown of the hotel and layoff of about 536 employees. "It's a sad day for Hilo. It's a sad day for the state," said David Farmer, the bankruptcy trustee for Hawaii Outdoor Tours Inc., which holds the state lease and operates the hotel. Sept. 13--Marriott International has approved the Laura Street Trio to be a 131-room Courtyard by Marriott hotel. Steve Atkins, who leads the group that bought the historic downtown buildings, said in August that the final approval by Marriott was close. Friday afternoon, he got the letter of approval. Atkins said he's still working with the city on an incentive package. But once and if that's OK'd, which he expects in a few weeks, construction should start in the first quarter of 2014. Sept. 13--NAVARRE BEACH -- Santa Rosa County Commissioner Jim Melvin said development of a new hotel on the former Holiday Inn site is gearing up for a ground-breaking in early 2014. No paperwork for the project has been submitted yet, but engineering teams for the hotel have had preliminary conversations with the county's Engineering Department. Sept. 13--The Culinary Union is preparing for a potential citywide strike -- its first in Las Vegas since 1984. In a written warning addressed to Wall Street investors, Unite Here, the parent company of the Culinary, says a strike will be imminent if solid contracts are not soon inked with MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment Corp. "Union workers are preparing for a major labor dispute," wrote Ken Liu, a Unite Here spokesman, suggesting the strike could happen this year. "As the companies have shown no urgency toward working out a settlement, union members have started to sign up for ID cards in preparation for a strike."
