To Take Advantage of Tampa Tourism Revival, Now at Pre-recession Levels, Money Needed for Marketing
August 25, 2013
Aug. 25--The mood was upbeat among the 100 or so industry participants attending the Hillsborough County Hotel & Motel Association's annual forecasting forum earlier this month -- and for good reason. There was plentiful news about new conference bookings and additional flights serving Tampa International Airport and cautious optimism that the economy has begun to improve. And Tennessee travel research consultant STR reported the Tampa market was back to mid-2007, pre-recession hotel and motel occupancy rates of about 70 percent. But the discussion turned somber when the topic turned to marketing funds available to capitalize on the
Developer Ronald Luccio Jr. Plans 60-room Boutique Hotel for Boston’s Financial District
August 24, 2013
Aug. 24--A 60-room hotel is being proposed for a narrow paved lot on Boston's High Street, across from the towering International Place in the Financial District. Developer Ronald Luccio Jr. plans to build an estimated $6 million, 15-story, glass-faced building for the moderately priced, limited-amenities hotel, where rooms would be small. "We're looking to do something that's a small boutique hotel -- something to kind of fill a gap," said Fred Mannix, a development consultant for the project. "We're trying to keep the price-point down so business people can use it," Mannix said. "We're not going to have a restaurant or a ballroom, so
New Owners Plan 96-room Expansion for the Hotel Commonwealth in Boston, Bringing it to 245 Rooms
August 24, 2013
Aug. 24--The Hotel Commonwealth is planning to expand, less than a year after new owners bought the Kenmore Square property. The owners plan to add 96 more rooms, event space and parking by building on to the back of the facility, which is currently a 23,000-square-foot parking lot that backs up to the Massachusetts Turnpike, according to plans filed with the Boston Redevelopment Authority. The new building would be no higher than the current building and consist of 134,000 square feet. It would make the Commonwealth a 245-room hotel. The hotel deferred comment to Denver-based Sage Hospitality, which did not return messages seeking comm
Albany, NY’s Latest Conventional Wisdom: Think Smaller; Now Looking at Scaled Down $58M Facility
August 24, 2013
Aug. 24--ALBANY -- The Albany Convention Center Authority has told its consultants to draft a plan for a scaled-down facility that will cost about $58 million, the authority's chairman said Friday. While that figure is not the official price tag for the smaller facility on Eagle Street, it marks the most specific signal yet of what officials expect the roughly 80,000 square feet of meeting space to cost. In announcing its retreat last month from a $220 million plan at a site off Broadway that had languished for years, officials said they were confident that the two-story structure off Eagle and Howard streets could be built for the roug

In January, the county signed contracts with the Related Cos., which it selected in 2010 to build the Palm Beach Convention Center Hilton. The process then moved to the city, and plans were turned in Tuesday, Related Vice President David Harrison said.
W Hotel Owner Files Lawsuit Against Los Angeles Over Millennium Hollywood Project
August 24, 2013
Aug. 24--A prominent hotel owner filed a lawsuit Friday against the city of Los Angeles over the Millennium Hollywood project. Benjamin Reznik, attorney for the W Hotel and Residences, said his client filed the lawsuit over the proposed two-tower Hollywood project. The suit alleges city officials signed off on the development without properly studying Millennium's environmental impacts, Reznik said. The suit cites the "generic, amorphous" nature of the proposed project, Reznik said. "We don't have a real description what they can build and we don't know how many of the views of the hills they will block," Reznik said. The Los Angeles Ci
