Confusion Yields Dubious Victory for Austin’s JW Marriott Case: Lessons Learned in Incentives
August 13, 2013
Aug. 13--Last week, the Austin City Council should have learned a lesson in putting clear conditions on incentives it offers to lure development. Those on the receiving end of those incentives should have learned a lesson in paying close attention to those conditions. That's about as positive a note as the ball of confusion over $3.8 million in incentives granted to White Lodging Development Services, then withdrawn last week, will yield. The incentives were aimed at encouraging White Lodging to construct a 1,000-plus room hotel at Second Street and Congress Avenue. The decision to withdraw the incentives ended a battle over how the com

Kenny will officially submit drawings and site plans for the hotel to the village Thursday, and those will be unveiled at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Village Hall, village officials announced Monday. Lake George Mayor Robert Blais called the project the largest proposed i
Faster than a Bullet Train? Tube Travel Proposed to Whisk People Between Major Cities
August 13, 2013
Aug. 13--People at the turn of the last century must have scoffed at the notion of one day getting inside a tube with wings and flying from one city to the next in a matter of hours. The latest concept of rapid travel getting guffaws is a $6 billion Hyperloop being proposed by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk. It sounds better than a bullet train. Musk wants to whisk people from downtown San Francisco to downtown Los Angeles in the low-pressure tube with capsules supported on a cushion of air., the San Jose Mercury News reports. The tubes would cover the distance of 380 miles between the two cities in a half-hour. By car it would take

August 13, 2013
Aug. 13--After four major protests outside the Cosmopolitan since January, the Culinary Union is turning up the pressure. The Culinary now plans to picket outside the Strip resort every weekend until they secure solid contracts for the 2,000 workers who have been clocking in without a labor agreement for more than two years. The weekly campaign begins Friday with two protests, running from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. The Culinary will be joined Friday by members of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, a union in town for an annual convention. Union officials contend the Cosmopolitan's owner, Deutsche Bank, is uninterested in se

August 11, 2013
Aug. 11--The developer of a six-story Hyatt Place hotel planned for Gervais Street in The Vista says construction could begin within 30 days and be finished in October 2014. Critics have complained that the hotel is too tall. But downtown boosters say the hotel is needed to attract larger events and meetings to the nearby Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center and to continue to increase visitors to The Vista. "While our convention center is really successful, we do need additional rooms to serve it," said Fred Delk, executive director of the Columbia Development Corp., which guides and encourages development in The Vista and other are
