July 24--NEW HAVEN -- A federal jury has found Michael Thomas, the former Mashantucket Pequot tribal chairman, guilty of charges he embezzled from the tribe that owns Foxwoods Resort Casino. The federal government had alleged that Thomas embezzled about $100,000 from the tribe through the misuse of a tribe-issued American Express card that was to be used strictly for business purposes. Thomas, 44, declined comment as he left the court room. "We're very disappointed," Thomas' federal public defender, Paul Thomas, who is not related to his client, said. South Florida Hotels Post Strong June Results with Occupancy, ADR & RevPAR Increases

July 24--Hotels throughout South Florida posted strong results for June as occupancy and rates climbed compared to a year ago. In Miami-Dade, hotels were about 74 percent full in June, a year-over-year increase of 2 percentage points, according to data released this week by Smith Travel Research. Average rates increased almost 4 percent to nearly $141 a night, and per-room revenue reached $104.40, up 6 percent. Broward hotels reported 71 percent occupancy, an increase of 6.4 percentage points compared to June of 2012. July 24--Pinnacle Entertainment's acquisition of Ameristar Casinos took a big step forward today as the Missouri Gaming Commission approved the takeover. Commissioners voted 4-0 to approve the change of control to Pinnacle, in which the casino operator can take over the gambling operations of the Ameristar casinos in St. Charles and Kansas City. Hotels to Reimburse Customers in Settlement With State For Price Gouging Post-Hurricane Sandy

July 23--Two Atlantic County hotel operators have settled with the state to reimburse customers who were "excessively and unjustifiably" charged for lodging immediately after Hurricane Sandy. These are the first settlements to come from the state's investigation into claims of price gouging at hotels after the storm, according to a statement from the Attorney General's Office today. Infant King Management, LLC, which owns the Howard Johnson Inn, 8029 Black Horse Pike, in West Atlantic City, will reimburse 59 customers a total of $1,183, as well as make a settlement payment of $28,817.
