July 19, 2013

July 19--BLAINE -- The new owners of the Semiahmoo Resort are hoping to open the hotel and a restaurant on Thursday, Aug. 15. Coastal Hotel Group, which is managing the resort's operations, is busy readying the hotel, including ordering new mattresses, landscaping, fixing leaks and painting, said Jerry Anches, a partner in Resort Semiahmoo. "There's a lot of work to be done, but we really want to be open for the community this summer," Anches said. Along with the hotel, the plan is to have Packers restaurant open on Aug. 15. Hampton Inn Hotel Planned for Fergus Falls, Minnesota Delayed But Still a Go

July 19, 2013

July 19--Hotel owners Brian and Vibha Patel still plan to build a Hampton Inn in Fergus Falls, even though the project hasn't gotten off the ground yet. "It's going to be delayed a couple months," Brian Patel said. Owners of 14 Hampton Inn hotels across the Midwest, the Patels last fall purchased the lots along Western Avenue on the west side of Fergus Falls near Interstate 94. In October, Brian Patel said he hoped construction would begin in March. Instead, the Patels were focused on building a $6.5 million Hampton Inn and Suites in Jamestown, N.D. It's a facility which includes 90 rooms ranging from suites to smaller single rooms, acc

Will Apple, Google or Microsoft Make One Operating System to Rule Them All?

July 18, 2013

July 18--With Microsoft Corp.'s reorganization last week, a curious thing has now happened at the three companies that are the biggest players in the world of operating systems. In the last year, Apple Inc., Google Inc. and Microsoft have all moved to put one person in charge of both their mobile and desktop operating systems. Coincidence? Perhaps. But Colin Gillis, an analyst at BGC Partners, who mentioned the trend in a recent conversation, says the shift seems to be pointing each company toward convergence some time, even if that point remains far down the road. "Do these companies want both of those operating systems?" Gillis said.

Plans for San Antonio, Texas $325 Million Convention Center Moving Forward

July 18, 2013

July 18--Plans for a $325 million Convention Center expansion are "remarkable" in blending old and new, but still need clarity on how the revamped center will interface with HemisFair Park, members of a city review board said Wednesday. A west entry next to the Convention Center Lagoon will be "the hometown face of this building, which it severely lacked previously," said Tim Cone, chairman of the Historic and Design Review Commission, which gave the project conceptual approval. Commissioner Michael Guarino said Populous, the national firm that designed the project, made great improvement in circulation and function of the building, and

Fort Lauderdale, Florida Firm Eyes Building 40 to 70-unit ‘Eco-Lodge’ in Deserted Plot in Upper Keys

July 18, 2013

July 18--ISLAMORADA -- In some of the world's most environmentally sensitive locations -- the rainforest of Brazil, the mountains of China and the Galapagos Islands -- a Fort Lauderdale-based landscaping architecture firm has been creating eco-sustainable resorts long before going green was in vogue. Now, the pioneering firm, EDSA, wants to create an eco-lodge much closer to home -- on eight acres of vacant land near busy U.S. 1 in the Upper Keys. At first glance, the small slice of deteriorating nature in the middle of sprawling Islamorada seems an unlikely choice for a world-class nature retreat, where eco tourists would pay a premium

After Years of Attempts by Developers, Two New Hotels Set to Break Ground in Hillsboro, Oregon

July 18, 2013

July 18--Two large hotels are coming to Hillsboro, ending years of near misses for developers of a project that city officials say will create a "landmark" along U.S. 26. Construction on both projects, a seven-story 165-room Embassy Suites adjacent to a four-story 106-room Hampton Inn & Suites, is expected to begin within the next few weeks. "The good news is it's definitely on," Gary Griffiths, principal with Salt Lake City area developer Western States Lodging, said. "It's a question of when." The hotels add much-needed meeting space to the community, according to city planners, local business leaders and lodging advocates, and co
