Aug. 05–ALBANY — Marriott on Monday announced plans to build a $48.5 million Renaissance Hotel inside the old DeWitt Clinton hotel in downtown Albany.
The state’s Upstate Regional Blueprint Fund will contribute $4 million toward the project which hotel officials say will create 100 permanent jobs. Officials say the project is expected to start in the fall and be completed by 2015.
Renaissance is luxury-style hotel offered by the international hotel chain. The new hotel is expected to offer 204 rooms. A garage with parking for 200 vehicles will also be build behind what is known as Wellington Row.
State and local officials are expected to make the announcement at a news conference.
That would give Albany a second large full-service hotel downtown, which in turn might help the city attract conventions to its newly proposed scaled-down convention center, which would be next door to the Marriott. It would also give the Times Union Center’s management additional leverage as it seeks to land dates for upcoming NCAA events.
The newly renovated Hilton Albany was unveiled last month and is a short distance from the DeWitt Clinton.
