Community stakeholders toured The Wick, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel in Hudson, NY this past Thursday, ahead of the December 19 opening. Soon to be a key destination in Columbia County, The Wick is accepting reservations this holiday season, timed perfectly to host discerning travelers eager to experience the culture, community and culinary excellence of Hudson.
Formerly a manufacturing plant, the adaptive re-use historic preservation project has preserved and transformed the historic property into a 55-room boutique hotel, with thoughtfully-designed guestrooms, including seven suites. The Wick Hotel draws upon the building’s heritage throughout the exterior and interior design with details that evoke the spirit of Hudson and honor its industrial candle-making history. The hotel will also feature an intimate and residential lobby bar and lounge, conference and meeting space, and a rooftop event space boasting breathtaking views of Hudson Valley.
Originally built in the 1860s, 41 Cross Street was known as South Bay Mill and functioned as a soap and candle manufacturing plant for Gale & Hover. In the late 1880s, Hover switched to textile manufacturing and the building was used for production and distribution. By the early 1900s, various businesses used different floors including Komfytite Spring & Bed and the Sirmount knitting mill. In the 1950s, the building was purchased by Max Katzman, who invented the electric vaporizer and started the Rural Manufacturing Company. Katzman added a concrete block section to the building used for manufacturing until 2000.
