U.S. Citizen Outbound Travel Departures from the United States Totaled 7,796,152 in March 2023, an Increase of 34% Compared to March 2022
Data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) show that in March 2023:
International Arrivals to the United States
- Total non-U.S. resident international visitor volume to the United States of 5,221,211 increased 62.3% compared to March 2022 and represents 83.4% of the pre-COVID total visitor volume reported for March 2019, up from the prior month’s 80.8%.
- Year-to-date (YTD) through March, international visitation of 14,103,302 increased 77.3% compared to the first three months of 2022 and represents 82.1% of the pre-COVID total visitor volume during the first three months of 2019.
- Overseas visitor volume to the United States of 2,157,606 increased 4% from March 2022.
- March 2023 was the twenty-fourth consecutive month that total non-U.S. resident international arrivals to the United States increased on a year-over-year (YOY) basis.
- Of the top 20 tourist generating countries to the United States, Colombia (with 61,949 visitors), was the only country that reported a decrease in visitor volume in March 2023 compared to March 2022, with a -5% change.
- The largest number of international visitor arrivals was from Canada (2,093,041), Mexico (970,564), the United Kingdom (300,896), Germany (144,399) and Japan (112,269). Combined, these top 5 source markets accounted for 69.4% of total international arrivals.
International Departures from the United States
- Total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States of 7,796,152 increased 34.0% compared to March 2022 and were 93.1% of total departures in pre-pandemic March 2019.
- March 2023 was the twenty-fourth consecutive month that total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States increased on a YOY basis.
- March 2023 YTD total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States totaled 20,359,127, a YOY increase of 45.0%. The YTD market share for North America (Mexico & Canada) was 51.6% and overseas was 48.4%.
- Mexico recorded the largest outbound visitor volume of 3,112,147 (39.9% of total departures for March and 43.2% YTD). Canada recorded a YOY increase of 103.9%.
- Combined YTD, Mexico (8,787,677) and the Caribbean (2,666,453) accounted for 56.3% of total U.S. citizen international visitor departures, down 2.0 percentage points from February 2023.
- Europe was the second largest market for outbound U.S. visitors with 1,404,010 departures. This accounted for 18.0% of all departures in March and 14.5% YTD. Outbound visitation to Europe in March 2023 increased 71.2% compared to March 2022.
