Outbound Travel Departures from the United States by U.S. Citizens Totaled 9,265,840 in May 2024, an Increase of 9.7 percent Compared to May 2023


Data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office show that in

May 2024, International Arrivals to the United States

  • Total non-U.S. resident international visitor volume to the United States of 6,068,711 increased +12.7 percent compared to May 2023 and represented 90.5 percent of the pre-COVID total visitor volume reported for May 2019.
  • Overseas visitor volume to the United States of 3,042,475 increased +17.5 percent from May 2023.
  • May 2024 was the thirty-eighth consecutive month that total non-U.S. resident international arrivals to the United States increased on a year-over-year basis.
  • May 2024 was the fifteenth consecutive month that overseas visitors totaled over 2 million.
  • Of the top 20 tourist generating countries to the United States, only Canada with 1,726,007, reported a decrease in visitor volume in May 2024 compared to May 2023, with a -0.2 percent change.
  • The largest number of international visitor arrivals was from Canada 1,726,007, Mexico 1,300,229, the United Kingdom 355,648, India 263,150, and Germany 189,693. Combined, these top 5 source markets accounted for 63.2 percent of total international arrivals.

 International Departures from the United States

  • Total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States of 9,265,840 increased 9.7 percent compared to May 2023 and were 108.6 percent of total departures in pre-pandemic May 2019.
  • May 2024 was the thirty-eighth consecutive month that total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States increased on a YOY basis.
  • The year-to-date market share for North America- Mexico & Canada was 49.6 percent and overseas was 50.4 percent.
  • Mexico recorded the largest outbound visitor volume of 3,024,756 32.6 percent of total departures for May and 39.6 percent. Canada recorded a YOY increase of 12.5 percent.
  • Combined YTD, Mexico 15,963,170 and the Caribbean 4,974,473 accounted for 51.9 percent of total U.S. citizen international visitor departures.
  • Europe was the second largest market for outbound U.S. visitors with 2,382,286 departures. This accounted for 25.7 percent of all departures in May. Outbound visitation to Europe in May 2024 increased 10.9 percent compared to May 2023.
