March 21–The Montrose area’s newest hotel, which is under construction, hopes to be open by late summer or early fall.
The Marriott Residence Inn is being built at 4080 Embassy Parkway, near state Route 18 and Interstate 77. It is in the same area as the Crystal Clinic and Akron General Wellness Center.
The new hotel is the right fit for the market as an upscale extended-stay hotel, said Scott Yaeger, a principal at Canton-based Radius Hospitality, which will own and operate the location. The group has 10 properties in Ohio, Illinois and New Jersey.
“The hotel business is all about brand when you boil it down. You have the right brand for travelers,” said Yaeger, who added that a new hotel has not been built in the Montrose area since early 2000. “The Residence Inn is very strong.”
The project has been in the works for several years after a previous Residence Inn on the Montrose hill changed brands and was for sale, said Yaeger. The hotel has since changed to a different brand. Years ago, another group of investors tried to build a hotel at the same location, but eventually sold the property to Radius. The property was annexed from Bath Township in 1995 and zoned for a hotel.
The project was temporarily delayed by the economy and other issues, but the hotel is now under roof, he said.
Windows are being installed and brick and stone work will soon begin, said Yaeger.
Yaeger said the hotel hopes to be open by the end of August or beginning of September with reservations being available about 90 days before. The hotel hopes to employ 35 to 40 people, both full time and part time and will be seeking employees a few months before the opening.
The project cost about $12 million, he said.
The four-story building will have 107 rooms with a mix of 76 studio suites, 18 one-bedroom suites, six two-bedroom suites and seven ADA-accessible suites. Each room will have a full kitchen, a 37-inch flat-screen high definition TV, a desk, couch and luxury bedding.
The project will total about 76,000 square feet.
Other amenities include an inside pool, whirlpool, fitness center, outdoor sports courts, wireless Internet and complimentary breakfast.
