Sept. 07–A Madison company’s plan to develop another hotel just south of Mitchell International Airport is moving forward.
Raymond Management Co. wants to develop a three-story hotel at 5880 S. Howell Ave., according to a new zoning proposal filed with the Milwaukee Common Council.
The new hotel would be next to a 143-room Hilton Garden Inn, which Raymond opened in 2010 at 5890 S. Howell Ave.
The new zoning filing doesn’t disclose the number of rooms in the proposed hotel, or its franchise name. A Raymond executive didn’t respond Friday to a request for information.
Ald. Terry Witkowski, whose district includes the site, said the hotel would likely be an extended-stay property, with about 120 rooms. He also said the franchise would be a Hilton Corp. brand.
Hilton’s extended-stay brands are Homewood Suites and Home2 Suites.
Raymond’s original plans for the site, filed with the city in 2007, called for two similarly sized hotels. Those plans also said each hotel would include a swimming pool, business center and exercise room.
According to its website, Raymond has four hotels under development in Wisconsin, North Dakota and Oklahoma.
The firm also operates 28 hotels in 10 states, including a Hampton Inn at 1200 W. College Ave., less than two miles from the Howell Ave. site.
The Howell Ave. site was formerly occupied by St. Stephen Catholic Church. The St. Stephen parish moved to 1441 W. Oakwood Road, Oak Creek, and the former church was demolished.
The zoning proposal will likely be reviewed by the Plan Commission and the council’s Zoning, Neighborhoods and Development Committee later this month, Witkowski said.
