In 2022, international spending grew by 490% compared to 2021, reaching more than 0.5 trillion dollars
Jobs corresponding to the sector increased by 26.4%, equivalent to almost 2% of total local jobs
London, United Kingdom:Â The World Travel and Tourism Council (Â WTTC ) revealed in its Economic Impact of Cities report that Latin America is making steady progress in reactivating the sector, and highlighted the role of the Chilean capital in tourism recovery.
The Economic Impact of Cities report, produced in collaboration with Oxford Economics, analyzed key factors for the Travel & Tourism sector in 82 cities around the world, including contribution to GDP, employment and international spending.
The data from the report shows the great interest of tourists in visiting the Chilean capital during 2022, demonstrating great progress towards the recovery of the sector.
The Travel and Tourism sector contributed to the city’s GDP with more than 2.6 trillion dollars in 2022, which corresponds to 1.7% of its total economy. This represents a growth of 54% compared to 2021, when the contribution reached 1.7 trillion dollars.
The report also reveals that employment in the sector saw an increase of more than 26% in 2022, compared to the previous year, reaching more than 76,800 jobs. This is equivalent to a direct contribution of almost 2% of the total local jobs and 26% of the country’s total.
On the other hand, the spending of tourists, local and international, had a great rebound in 2022. International spending grew by 490% compared to 2021, reaching more than 0.5 trillion dollars.
The Chilean capital was one of the cities preferred by nationals; household spending saw a 32% increase, reaching nearly $4.2 trillion.
Santiago once again presented itself as one of the most attractive destinations for tourists from Latin America, as well as for Chileans themselves.
