How to Promote Empowerment in Hospitality Through Servant Leadership
Dr. Steffen Raub | May 28, 2021
By Dr. Steffen Raub Putting people ahead of power is not the usual leadership paradigm most of us are accustomed to, and yet, research is beginning to show that amazing things can happen when leaders decide to make serving their team a priority. Traditional power leadership models turned upside down When we think about leaders, the idea of “serving” others is usually the last that comes to our mind. Leaders are depicted as those who drive, who give orders, directions and whose instructions need to be followed. Subordinates serve leaders, not the other way round, right? Is “servant leadership” nothing more than an oxymoron? W...
In a World of Mobile Lifestyles and Remote Working, What Role Will Hotels Play?
Kimberly Yoong | May 4, 2021
By Kimberly Yoong, Borivoj Vokrinek At a time when many of the world’s events continue to be plagued by COVID-19, making plans even a week in advance may seem difficult, much less 10 years into the future. Nearly overnight, the dialogue shifted from “where to for lunch?” to “can you hear me?”. And as hotels emptied out and travel restrictions drag on, many may wonder, where lies the future of hotels? To answer this question, it is first important to recognize that the hotel sector does not exist as an individual silo, but one which forms part of a much wider network: the ecosystem of how we live and work. The cities in which ...

Pierre Verbeke | March 27, 2020
Even during some of the worst crisis in the past, hotels or restaurants have not been forced to close. We are in uncharted waters: what should hoteliers keep in mind to navigate the current crisis? By Pierre Verbeke We are reading a lot these days about this unprecedented crisis and the profound impact this has and will have on our business. Never before have we seen mandatory hotel or restaurant closures on a scale as today. Even during some of the worst crisis in the past, hotels or r...
Chinese Tourism at a Difficult Time
Yong Chen | March 19, 2020
What makes the year 2019-20 unprecedented in Chinese tourism is the spate of incidents coming one after another, namely the US-China trade war, the Hong Kong protests and the novel coronavirus outbreak. By Yong Chen Demand shocks and tourism The global tourism industry could not have been hurt so badly any time in history other than the year 2019−20. The tourism industry involves temporary displacement of people from one place to another, whereby demand is generated. Thus, any factor that impedes tourist flow will cause a negative demand shock in the industry one way or another. The impact on tourism demand depends on the nature of the...

As the impact of the global coronavirus outbreak ripples through markets, what's the outlook for tomorrow's economy? By Dr. Giuliano Bianchi Daughter: “Mom, can you tell me a bedtime story?” Mom: “Of course. Do you know the story of the people and their economy of the last two decades?” Daughter: “Is it scary?” Mom: “Quite!” Once upon a time, there was a recovering economy that was finally growing after the 2008 financial meltdown. But then, a scary virus jumped from exotic wild animals to human beings and spread over many continents. In this moment of fear, people reduced their level of consumption leading t...

Hospitality Insights | February 28, 2020
Service excellence is the foundation of luxury hotels and the Ritz-Carlton has received many awards for it. Here are 5 steps it takes to remain best in class. When you opt for a five-star hotel, you expect luxury. Marble, not granite. Silverware, not stainless steel. Crystal rather than glass. A high thread count. You expect the receptionist who welcomes you on arrival to speak your language. You anticipate valet parking or someone to show you to your room, relieving you of the burden of your heavy suitcases. You presume the hotel restaurant, or indeed restaurants, will serve exquisite cuisine at your beck and call. You want access to addi...
