Amid a Labor Crunch, One Hotel Tried Something Different
HotStats | October 22, 2021
Opening a hotel amid even normal times is a challenge. But these times are anything but ordinary. For The Rockaway Beach Hotel, in Queens, NY, opening last fall was compounded by a raging global pandemic and a resultant labor crunch. According to HotStats data, labor costs globally are on the rise, but still below their 2019 levels. In the U.S., total hotel payroll on a per-available-room basis sat at $52.99 in August 2021 and has been on a steady incline since the beginning of the year—now 62% of 2019 levels. Ideas to Overcome the Current US Employment Conundrum
Keith Kefgen | October 21, 2021
By Keith Kefgen Today’s employment environment is like nothing we have experienced before. The last pandemic happened in 1918, with a very different labour and economic atmosphere. There are no easy answers to a vast number of questions and nuanced circumstances. The travel industry has been particularly hard hit, as so many people were furloughed last year without any real answer about when they would return. I walked out of Mr. Maltin’s presentation with a better understanding of employment law, and I’m certain that I was not the only one. During his presentation, Mr. Maltin stated that management should use team meetings to discuss subjects that protect employees and the business. I 100% agree. However, after two decades of working i...

An indispensable tool LinkedIn has become part of our everyday life, an indispensable instrument to know more about the other without physi...
Can Gig Workers Solve the Hotel Labor Crisis?
HotStats | August 11, 2021
When the pandemic shut down travel, forcing hoteliers to furlough or layoff large swaths of their teams, employers weren’t thinking about the long-term impact—they were in crisis mode, trying to staunch the bleeding. It’s been a slow climb back, but as the hotel industry returns, some employees have exited, leaving a gaping labor hole, with owners and management companies desperate to find people to clean rooms, perform maintenance and fill many other roles. Traditionally, hotels would hire full-time staff directly. Now, some hotels are looking at another way to fill positions, one that’s long been more common with the likes of ...
