Penn State School of Hospitality Management | October 30, 2024
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Hiring those who have criminal records or histories of incarceration serves a significant role in the integration of those individuals back into society while helping hospitality businesses withstand labor shortages, according to researchers in the Penn State School of Hospitality Management. The researchers developed a framework to guide hospitality businesses in the efforts to break down barriers of bias and destigmatize the hiring of these individuals. The team identified three major stakeholder groups — the hired employees, those in the correctional system responsible for administering and overseei...

EHL Insights | May 2, 2023
Horizontal working modes typically imply, for example, that employees from department “A” be given regular opportunities to collaborate on cross-functional projects with employees from departments "B", “C", "D”, or “Z." You name them. When these cross-functional collaborations multiply throughout/across the organization, here is what you get in the short term: the sharing of new ideas, knowledge, and best practices. In 2023 hotel employers must focus on the increasing gap between how their frontline staff is currently being managed and how they should be managed in order to create a connected workforce. Building an Older, Wiser Workforce
PolyU’s School of Hotel and Tourism Management | May 23, 2022
Sad to say, hotel managers – unwittingly or not – often hold negative perceptions of older workers. People older than 50 make up less than a fifth of all hotel employees. Where does this apparent aversion to employing older people come from? As a vital first step in addressing the low employment rate of older people in this sector, BSc graduate Sau Yin Cheung and Assistant Professor Linda Woo of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University explored age stereotypes and job suitability assessments among hotel managers in Hong Kong.
