Why Women Are the Answer to America’s Labor Shortage
JLL Real Views | June 4, 2018
The latest jobs numbers show the massive labor shortage in the United States is getting worse before it gets any better. There were 6.6 million positions sitting vacant without qualified people to fill them as of March 2018 – an increase of roughly 300,000 in two months. Some of the most qualified people to fill these skilled roles have one thing in common: X chromosomes. A look at the pool of unemployed workers of "prime age" – between 25 and 45 – reveals a much higher percentage of educated women than educated men. There were 1.4 million prime-age American women with master's or other advanced degrees that weren't in...
Why France’s Hotel Sector is on the Road to Recovery
JLL Real Views | April 5, 2018
by Emily Perryman As tourists return once more to soak up the sights and tastes of France, its hotel sector is rebounding rapidly from its 2016 low point. Just under 89 million tourists visited France in 2017, according to French government figures, a five to six percent year-on-year rise that puts the country back on track to reach its ambitious 100 million target by 2020. It's a welcome turnaround from the previous year, when tourist numbers in the worst-hit region of Greater Paris fell by 1.5 million in the wake of a spate of terrorist attacks. By September 2016, hotel RevPAR (revenue per available room) was down almost 16 percent on...
How Disruption is Driving Change for Hotels
JLL Real Views | December 18, 2017
By Natalie Holmes From the likes of Airbnb to growing competition in the food and beverage space, disruptive forces are striking the hotel industry from all angles. Yet this is far from being a bad thing, Arthur Adler, Chairman of JLL's Hotels & Hospitality Group – Americas, believes. Instead, disruption is driving innovation across the industry as hotel brands and operators implement new concepts to improve their offerings and keep their guests coming back for more. "The guest experience and profitablility is really what's driving all of this innovation," says Adler. "As travelers' preferences for their lodging changes, the h...
How the Middle East is Drawing in Chinese Visitors
JLL Real Views | November 13, 2017
By Emily Perryman Whether they're after windswept deserts, archaeological treasures or luxurious beach resorts, China's growing middle class is increasingly considering the Middle East as their next holiday destination. Amid rising affluence levels, the number of travelers from China has soared in recent years, making it the world's largest outbound tourism market. But in addition to visiting countries in the Far East and Europe, Chinese tourists are seeking new destinations off the beaten path. Last year, around 540,000 tourists visited Dubai from China, up from 450,000 in 2015. It makes China one of Dubai's top 10 source markets, acco...

Jll Real Views | October 26, 2017
By Serene Lim Tourism is booming like never before in the Land of the Rising Sun as visitors flock from across Asia and further afield. While rising numbers are in line with government plans to welcome 60 million tourists by 2030 to help offset struggling areas of the Japanese economy, the hotel industry faces in own challenges in keeping up with growing demand for rooms. Last year, hotel construction starts doubled to 1.96 million square metres, reaching an 18 year high. Major hotel operators are rushing to open before the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 – Marriott leads the pack with five properties as it rebrands existing hotels. Meanwh...
Why Hotels Are Setting up Shop in Suburban Shopping Centers
JLL Real Views | June 15, 2017
By Laura Agadoni Imagine stepping outside your suburban hotel, and instead of jumping in a car to shop or eat, you can easily walk to all your favorite stores and restaurants. Across the U.S., new hotels are enabling their guests to have local amenities on their doorstep – by backfilling vacant shopping center space. It's not just an arrangement that benefits guests and the hotel chains; it's also helping to revitalize American shopping centers that may have lost a middle-market anchor. Over the past two years, large format anchors have closed. JCPenney, Macy's, and Sears and Kmart are shutting down 324 stores between them across ...
Hotels Take a Fresh Look at Communal Spaces
JLL Real Views | March 20, 2017
By Laura Agadoni From hip lobbies with a coffee shop ambiance to shared living spaces linking guest rooms, more hotels are turning their focus to providing inviting community areas. For corporate travelers, it may mean sending a few emails from a co-working alcove complete with power and USB outlets, while leisure visitors may linger around tables stacked with board games or post photos to social media from the lounging zones. "Today's travelers often place greater value on convenience, sense of place and community than they do on the traditional luxuries offered by hotels," says David A. Black, Americas Hotels Lead, JLL Project and Dev...
