It’s Time to Eliminate Generationalism in the Hotel Workplace: Myth of Generational Differences Has Been Busted by Research
Doug Kennedy | April 8, 2024
By Doug Kennedy As my frequent readers know, I have been bemoaning the myths that are thrown out as facts at conferences, podcasts, and in books and blogs that, at best, mislead hospitality leaders and at worst, lead to discrimination based on birth year. Generationism is harmful, just like racism and sexism. Worse yet, many of those spewing these falsehoods are making a handsome profit by doing so. Seems like just about every conference I speak at lately has another high-paid keynote speaker addressing some topic related to what “Gen Z” or “Millennials” want out of work, life, and what they are looking for in a hotel workplace....
Hospitality Trends: How Are the Different Generations Traveling?
Tatyana Tsukanova | May 16, 2023
By Tatyana Tsukanova, Lionel Saul The hospitality and tourism industry has always come up with names to describe cohorts of travelers that share similar interests and behaviors. Sometimes those names follow the famous generation categorization, such as Millennial travelers and Gen Z travelers, or have more tailored-made definitions. Silent travel and its impact In the last decade, the impact of the generalization of smartphone usage has created a new category of travelers: silent travelers. This cohort has adopted mobile technology to enhance or even replace the conventional in-person service delivery that occurs in the hospitality ...

Fixing Las Vegas’ Millennial Problem
Tucker Johnson | January 14, 2019
By Tucker Johnson Last month I was an invited instructor for the Casino Resort Management course within the University of Houston's Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management. This was one of many experiential courses offered by the college and gave me the opportunity to visit Las Vegas for five days, getting a behind-the-scenes look at high-roller suites, gaming floors, and high-tech security systems. While each casino resort had a different feel, and our hosts gave different insights, one problem was mentioned consistently across the properties: Millennials were not gaming at high levels and, although the casinos were...
The Stereotyping of Millennials Has Gone Too Far
Doug Kennedy | October 22, 2018
By Doug Kennedy Seems like just about every conference I speak at lately has another speaker addressing some topic related to "those Millennials." Likewise, seems like at least once a week every lodging publication I read has an article about the challenges of marketing to or the managing of Millennials. I certainly understand that this is an entertaining subject and there is value in personifying the demographics of various age groups for analytical purposes. Yet lately it seems to me that this is being taken too far. Hotel brands are being launched, training programs are being altered, HR recruitment methods are being changed, all to ...
Travelers Want Meaningful Vacations in 2018, Not More of Them
MMGY Global | June 22, 2018
NEW YORK (June 22, 2018) – Today, MMGY Global released key findings from the 2018-2019 Portrait of American Travelers® study suggesting that travelers are seeking more meaning behind each vacation, rather than more vacations. The study reveals 30% of travelers plan to take fewer vacations next year, meaning travelers could take up to six million fewer vacations in 2018 compared to 2017. This is the first time there has been a negative variance in intent to travel (nine point decrease) in the 12 years this question has been asked. However, although people are traveling less, travel spending will hold steady into 2019, showing t...
