Warm U.S. Beach Markets Shine Early in 2023, Inflation Cuts Into ADR Gains

STR | February 23, 2023

The top hotel markets in this edition of STR’s U.S. “bubble” chart update show the persistent staying power of warm, outdoor-oriented markets as well as expected seasonal shifts for the opening months of the year. Additionally, for the four weeks ending 11 February, the greatest driver of gains in revenue per available room (RevPAR) continued to be average daily rate (ADR), while occupancy remained below 2019 benchmarks for more than half of markets. (www.hotelmogel.com) Much has been written over the summer of COVID-19 about the resurgence of the Great American Road Trip, as millions were forced to rediscover the hidden gems of their own state or nation, instead of taking an international flight. Now with the virus continuing to plague our news cycle and our ability to open borders, it’s not unreasonable to assume that many travelers will perpetuate the drive-to hotel trend we’ve seen thus far. Many of you may initially scoff at this as the whole idea of the long cross-country drive is traditionally predicated on warm weather to make for a plea...

Ending Seasonality One Week at a Time

Larry Mogelonsky | November 18, 2020

By Larry Mogelonsky, MBA, P. Eng. (www.hotelmogel.com) The seasonal ebbs and flows of occupancy are real, especially in the face of such uncertainty as a result of COVID-19. While rural resorts endure this and must make grand adjustments in staffing to accommodate budgetary fluctuations – no matter the short-term benefits from the influx of domestic travel of late – numerous other properties are still affected with double-digit dips and last-minute nightly rate tweaks, all to stay relevant with the various macro-forces at work in any given territory. But while necessary measures must be enacted, wouldn’t it be great to instill wit...
