March 28, 2023

U.S. hotel occupancy leaders and laggards in the March 2023 “bubble” chart update reinforce three key trends that began to develop late in 2022. Leisure-oriented markets remain firmly rooted near the top of the national leaderboard. As we have already entered the school spring break season, we expect warmer markets near beaches to maintain their strong performance in the coming weeks. While the four weeks ending 18 Mar...

Easter Swing Shifts School Breaks Substantially in Spring 2023

STR | March 1, 2023

As spring break season approaches, tracking school calendar data becomes critical for predicting travel demand across the U.S. The swings from one academic year to another can generate substantial waves in hotel performance, since vacation scheduling directly impacts over 50 million public K-12 students across the country, not to mention their families. Beginning with the second weekend of March, spring break 2023 will kick into gear for school districts around the U.S. From Saturday, 11 March through Friday, 17 March, roughly one third of all K-12 students will be on break and available to travel. By the end of the week, the p...

U.S. Spring Break Destinations Continue Dominance With Peak Still to Come

STR | March 23, 2022

Leisure travel continues to be particularly strong in the U.S. as spring kicks into gear, and the biggest hotel performance wins recently have come in those U.S. markets that are traditional Spring Break destinations. At the same time, major urban centers are seeing some return of transient business demand along with increases in group bookings. Since last month’s update, travelers have continued to seek relief and respite in warmer or winter-fun locales, as shown by hotel performance data for the four weeks ending 12 March 2022. This is an especially good sign for the industry as the largest percentage of K-12 students are not expected...
