7 Changes the UK’s Hotel Sector Can’t Afford to Ignore
HVS | January 13, 2022
The pandemic, Brexit and ongoing supply issues have prompted key changes in the UK’s hotel sector, many of which are long-term, if not permanent. ‘The past 18 months has been an unprecedented time for hotels. In order to survive, businesses must embrace change across their entire operation and do so quickly,’ says HVS London chairman Russell Kett, who outlines seven changes that businesses can’t afford to ignore as we move into 2022. 1. Reliance on technology: The use of smart rooms, digital reception, keyless rooms entry, smart payment, smart check-in/-out – with some hotels eliminating the need for a front-of-h...
UK Hotel Sector Needs Urgent Government Support, Says HVS
HVS | January 8, 2021
London, 8 January 2021: Insolvencies and job losses in the UK’s hotel sector caused by the pandemic are likely to increase through 2021 as businesses face a very tough year ahead, according to global hotel consultancy HVS. “While strong gains in top-line revenues when they come, will be cause for celebration, operating profits will be anaemic and less than half of 2019 levels in the Provinces and around a third of 2019 levels for London hotels. When fixed costs are then deducted many operations will be loss making and will experience negative cash-flow until further strong revenue gains can be made in H2 2021 and beyond,” says ...
UK Hotel Sector Can Breathe a Small Sigh of Relief
HVS | March 12, 2020
The Chancellor of the Exchequer has announced a number of measures in his Budget statement which should assist the UK hotel sector in the wake of the coronavirus, which has already precipitated a number of events and overnight stays in hotels to be cancelled or postponed, thereby causing a fall in hotel occupancy. The Chancellor has singled out the sector to receive a number of benefits which will help to reduce some of the pain, especially for smaller businesses – and not therefore for the larger enterprises that make up the vast majority of the sector. These measures include: Firms with fewer than 250 staff will be refunded for si...

HVS | November 1, 2018
The UK's hotel sector has stood firm in what is proving a tough trading year, with overall occupancy in London slightly up and the provinces remaining flat in the year to date. Speaking to an audience of HOSPA members (the Hospitality Professionals Association) in London today [1 November 2018] HVS chairman Russell Kett said that average rates had also shown little change, leading to a minimal impact on RevPAR [rooms revenue per available room, the standard performance measurement], which now sits at £121* for London and £57 in the regions for the year to September. London has fared better than the provinces over the past th...
Reliance on Corporate Business Prompts Growing Divide in UK Hotel Performance, Says Hotel Bulletin
HVS | February 7, 2017
07 February 2017, London: A growing divide is emerging in the UK's hotel sector between the performance of leisure-based hotels compared with primarily business-orientated properties, according to the latest Hotel Bulletin Q4 2016, published this week by HVS, AlixPartners, STR and AM:PM. Those hotels in cities with a more developed tourism industry performed noticeably better in Q4 2016 as a result of the weaker pound attracting foreign tourists and Brits choosing staycations. Belfast, for example, saw RevPAR (rooms revenue per available room) growth of 23% during the final quarter of 2016 on the back of significant investment in the ci...
