Africa Hotel Development: It’s Egypt, Morocco, Accor & Marriott

W Hospitality Group | June 6, 2022

TAGHAZOUT, Morocco, June 6, 2022/ -- Just four words are needed to sum up the main findings of this year’s African hotel chain development pipeline survey conducted by W Hospitality Group, in association with the Africa Hospitality Investment Forum (AHIF); those words are Egypt, Morocco, Accor and Marriott. This year’s annual survey, which is widely acknowledged as the industry’s most authoritative source, has, as of Q1 2022, a record 42 global and regional (African) contributors, reporting on a pipeline of hotel development activity totalling around 80,300 rooms in 447 hotels, in 42 of Africa’s 54 countries. Looking first at th...

COVID-19 Threatens to Ruin a Record Year for Africa’s Hotel Developers

W Hospitality Group | June 17, 2020

LONDON, United Kingdom, June 17, 2020 - African hotel development had returned to growth at the start of 2020, with more than 78,000 rooms in 408 hotels in the pipeline, according to the 12th annual survey by W Hospitality Group, acknowledged as the industry’s most authoritative source. However, the COVID-19 outbreak is now shattering the dreams of Africa’s hotel industry. W Hospitality Group’s Managing Director, Trevor Ward, said: “The growth of the chains’ presence in Africa has been a very positive story since we started this analysis in 2009. It is quite clear from the numbers that the chains, the developers, the investors â€...

API Events | November 14, 2017

W Hospitality Group's 2017 Hotel Chains Pipeline report shows that hotel groups need to tackle lengthy development periods in West Africa JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, November 14, 2017 -- West Africa has been at the heart of the continent's growth and economic transformation in recent years. Notwithstanding the sharp slowdown experienced in 2016 and 2017, the region's economy is expected to rebound in 2017 onwards. Commodity-based economies, like Nigeria, are slowly recovering from the fall in oil prices and oil production, while countries like Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, and Senegal have shown economic resilience and sustained growth. As...

Hotel Development in Africa Jumps 30% to 64,000 Rooms

W Hospitality Group | April 13, 2016

LONDON, United Kingdom, April 13, 2016 -- The number of planned hotel rooms in Africa has soared to 64,000 in 365 hotels, up almost 30% on the previous year, according to new figures from the annual W Hospitality Group Hotel Chain Development Pipeline Survey. The increase is largely down to strong growth in sub-Saharan Africa, which is up 42.1% on 2015 and is significantly outstripping North Africa which achieved only a modest 7.5% pipeline increase this year. A major shake-up in the rankings by country saw Angola, never before listed among the top 10, push Egypt out of second place, due to a major deal there signed by AccorHotels. The ...
